STOCK XAEKET OPERATIONS.
Transactions in yesterday's stock market were
heavy In volume on a movement «f values that
§j«neraJly tended in the direction of higher quo
tations. Commission houses m-ere active factors
In the day's dealings, while the leading- specu
lative and Investment Interests were actively
identified with the upward course of prices, es
pecially in the hi«rh rrade railroad Issues and
some of the Industrials, the latter croup ap
parently bemc taken on the theory that a boom
Is about to develop In the shares of the Indus
trial companies. In the early trading decided
strength was shown in Canadian Pacific. Mis
souri, Kansas and Texas preferred and In sev
eral of the industrial securities that recently
have been active. Near the end of the first
hour the market was Inclined to harden, and
for some stocks became decidedly strong. Later
there was a moderate reaction and more or less
irregularity developed In the active issues. In
the last hour, however, the list as a whole
Showed marked etrength. with Union Pacific.
New-York Central and St. Paul as the chief
features. The closing was strong at about the
best prices.
In the industrial list the biggest advance
—as made by American Smelting and Refining
common, which gained five points or more, to
120 H. This is a new high record price for this
security and fractionally above the figure at
which the stock Is reckoned In the consolida
tion plans that have been worked out. National
Lead and Federal Mining and Smelting stocks,
which also are to participate in the merger.
were proportionately active and strong. In the
railway equipment group of securities American
l^ocosnotive common was the feature, selling up
to GO. The preferred stock advanced 2 per cent
or Basse Further good buying of Canadian
Pacific was reported throughout the day. In
fact, ft i? understood that buying orders of a
significant character were cabled to the London
jnarkct early yesterday morning. This company
has been extremely liberal with its stockholders
In the j>ast, and in view of Its large and valu
able assets and the tremendous development
that is certain to come in the Canadian North
west, men who are familiar with that territory
expect that th« Canadian Pacific management
v.ill continue to make liberal extra distributions
to their stockholders. At IBs the stock yields
4 per cer.t. but it probably is only a matter of
a comparatively little time until the dividend
Is Increased to 7 per cent. The local news de
velopments of the day, while not of great Im
portance, were uniformly favorable. Money is
still the CT«ar factor in the securities markets,
and there is nothing to Indicate that rates will
be appreciably higher In the near future. On
the contrary, it looks as if they would remain
approximately unchanged for many weeks to
come, especially as gold will Boon begin to
arrive jr. fairly iarge amounts from the Klon
dike. A fact that appears to be overlooked Is
that the reshape of bonds held as security for
government deposits, on May 15 and a subse
quent date, will enable the banks Immediately
to re-employ them as a basis for Increased cir
culation.
The weekly ttvhmw of the steel trade by a
well krown publication indicates that. Instead
«f a lessening Jn business, the volume Is In
creasing at a rapid rate In the month of March
the consumption of pig iron reached the enor
mous aggregate volume of 2,000.000 ton*. The
demand for this product continues heavy, and
the indications are that it will not be necessary
to import iron ani strel nn a large scale, as It
»af f?ar*d a short time ago would be necessary.
Thert- 1r ptill an excellent demand for all classes
of iron and Bt<»el products. The representative
of a Stock Exchange house who has given con
siderable attention to the wheat and corn crops
took occasion yesterday to express the opinion
that the recent government estimate of this
year's whest crop Is too large. Whether this
Is true or not it snems evident that the yield
will be much larger than that of last year.

WALL STREET AND EXCHANGES.
FOREIGN TRADING.— Foreign houses dealt In
35,000 shares in the local market, buying 25.000 on
balance. In London British consols were steady
and the general market was firm. There was an In
creased demand for the copper securities.
MISSOURI. KANSAS AND TEXAS.— It Is under
stood that It Is proposed to Issue $20,000,000 of de
benture bonds to provide for improvements, etc.,
the issue of which will release earnings for tho
stock. The Missouri. Kansas and Texas is now
controlled In Holland, and the Dutch hoUera of the
stock are demanding dividends, especially as the
road Is earning at the rate of about 8 per cent upon
its preferred stock. Under the Rockefeller regime
It was the policy to put back In the property all
earnings, and the result of this policy was to place
the road in about the best condition of any South
western road. It is now a system of three Thousand
miles, with the main line well ballasted and laid
with heavy steel rails. When Mr. Rouse, who has
been the moving spirit in th» Missouri. Kansas and
Texas, decided to go übroad upon a long vacation,
he resigned as president and was elected chairman
of the board of directors. It is understood that Mr.
Rouse will again assume the presidency and active
management of the property, and that stockholders
hereafter will receive dividends.
DUN'S INDEX NUMBER.— Dun's Index Number
of commodity prices proportioned to consumption
was *99.206 on April 1. against $101,939 on March 1
and $102,482 a year previous. The decline during the
month of March was a seasonable event, accel
erated by the sudden rise In temperature, which
Increased the i reduction of eggs and oth»r food
stuff* of th» dairy and garden class. In addition, a
bright outlook for the new crop of farm staples
depressed market values of grain, and the usual
spring discount for anthracite coal became effective.
The net decline In all commodities, saving each its
relative position of importance, was 2.7 per cent for
the month, while In articles of food, which comprise
about one-half of the total, the fall amounted to 4.1
per cent. One gratifying feature of the March rec
ord was the entire absence of inflation of quotations
for Iron and steel products, notwithstanding the
rapid Improvement In volume of business. This
evidence of conservatism by the leading producer
will do much to maintain stability In the market,
and promises continued operation of furnaces and
mills at maximum capacity.

OUTSIDE SECURITIES.
The market for outside securities was inclined to
recover somewhat from Tuesday's depression. At
the opening prices ruled generally firm, with small
fractional gains In the active Issues. This, however,
was short lived. Before the first half hour had
elapsed there was heavy selling by the same In
terests which were Instrumental In breaking the
market Tuesday. Some severe declines took place
in the high priced stocks, while all through the list
losses of small proportions were sustained. After
the noon hour a sharp rally occurred under cover-
Ing and better support. The volume of dealings
was on a fairly heavy scale, although the bulk of
trading was still concentrated in four or five stocks.
Northern Securities opened up •■ per cent, but sub
sequently broke I>4 per cent, with a rally of 1% per
cent. American Can issues fell sharply; the com
mon sold oft »i per cent and the preferred over 2 per
cent. Both Issues, however, subsequently gained
substantially. American Writing Paper preferred,
after an early loss of } 2 . recovered »4 per cent.
Interborough Rapid Transit was off a point. Inter
national Mercantile Marine shares were down !t! t ''j
per cent. United States Leather stocks held gen
erally steady. Mackay shares were steady. Stand
ard Oil was off about rive points. In the Copper
