< OBITUARY. VAJOR GENERAL J. & PARKHURST. Coldwater. Mteh.. May 7.-MaJor General J. a Parkhurst, well known as an officer in th« Army of the Cumberland during the Civil W«r. who served for two yearn as provost marshal gwersi under General Thomas, and who was United States Minister to Belgium under President Cleveland, died suddenly hist night at his home her*. General John Gibson Parkhurst was a native of Oneida Castle. N. V.. where he was born on April 17. 1824. After graduation from the Oneida Acad emy, he studied law, and was admitted to the bar sing ii Oneida for two yean he went to Michigan, where he was engaged In the work of his* profession when the Civil War broke out. He had been secretary of the National Demo cratic Convention in 1960, and on September H>, 1861. enlisted in the army. He was lieutenant colonel and colonel of the fth Michigan Infantry and a brigadier general on the staff of General George H. Thomas. He also saw service as provost marshal of the Fourteenth Army Corps and provost mar shal general of the Department of the Cumberland, also of the Military Division of Tennessee. After the war he was United States Marshal for Michigan from :866 to 18». He then returned to his law prac tice, but in IMB he was appointed by President Cleveland Minister to Belgium, and served two years. General Parkhurst was married three times. MAX JLfDD St. I»uia. May 7.— Max Judd. of national repu tation as a chess player, died suddenly In his room at the MontleeUo Hotel to-day. Death was due to angina peetoris. induced by nervous strain over a game. Max Judd was born in a little village near Kr» kau. Austria, on December 27, 1852. At the age of twelve he came to this country and lived at first at Cleveland, and later at St. Louis. He soon made a name ac a chess player, winning the cham pionship of Ohio in 1871. holding the title until IS9I. He played in many national and interna tional chess tournament* in this country and •broad, and received many second, third, fourth and fifth prlzf-s. ns. for Instance, at Cleveland in I*7l. Hodges, Showalter and Others He playefl last in a national tourney dur ing the World's Fair at ft. Louis, winning the second prise after Marshall. Judd leaves a wife, but no children. COLONEL HENRY H. ADAMS. Greenwich. Conn., May 7.— Colonel Henry H. Adams, of New York, well known In military elr c!^s and in the iron and steel business, died at his summer home hero to-day, as the result of an op eration for the removal of hie leg. Colonel Adams wa« sixty-two years old, and until recently wbi president of the Colonial Iron Company, of Penn sylvania. He was vice-president of the Patriotic lieaeue of America, an ex -captain of the Old Guard and a member of several clubs and societies in New York. H* leaves one son and two daughters. all of New York- THOMAS B. CANNON. Shelbyvllle, T>nn.. May 7.— Thomas B. Cannon, a relative of Speaker Cannon and a nephew of New ton Cannon, a pioneer Governor of this state, died here yesterday, at the age of ninety-one. JOHN A. BCHWARZ. John A.
