The high grade shares were in demand, and the scarce supply of Great Northern and North ern Pacific was responsible for marked improve ment in these stocks, while the Influence on the rest of the list of the rise in the high grade securities was marked. In American Smelting. Colorado Fuel, 'distillers* Securities and Read ing. In which recently there has been specula tive buying for both accounts, heaviness due to realizing" was reported, but the declines were not important, while offerings were well taken. There was a good distribution of business throughout the list, with the heaviest opera tions in th» metal shares, Atchison, the Hill stocks. Pennsylvania. Reading. Southern : Paci fic. Union Pacific and the local traction issues, improvement in the last named being helped by the reports of earnings for the last quarter. A cut in Its dividend rate by the Brooklyn Union Gas Company was without effect on speculation. Inasmuch as this action had been expected, following the recent cut by the Con solidated Company. Sentiment was favorably affected by the government's report on winter wheat, showing a percentage on May 1 of 91 as compared with I>2 a year ago, indicating a yield above the normal. The easier tendency in the money market has been effective in bringing about stronger rates for foreign exchange, and, as a consequence, quotations for the latter are now well above the point at which gold may be Imported at a profit. It is generally believed that in view of the de velopments in monetary conditions in the last few days no further efforts will be made to bring In gold from Europe, and, of course, this may b° taken as a sign that the position of affairs at this centre has undergone a change which no longer makes shipments of the pre cious metal to the United States necessary. Time money has moved to a slightly lower level, while call funds may now be obtained at figures which impose no great burden on bor rowers. It is impossible at the moment, how ever, to predict an extremely easy money mar ket In the near future, owing to the uncertainty over the extent of the demands for capital which will develop with the active opening of busi ness and rebuilding in San Francisco. So far in the current week the local b-inks have gained in their operations with the Sub-Treasury more than $1,000,006. and it is not unlikely that the < louring House statement to-morrow will show an Increase both In cash and reserve holdings, especially as in the statement of a week ago the known increase was not reflected in the bank return, this being due to the inconsistencies of the average system which the Clearing House employs in compiling weekly statements. The Bank of England, at ita regular weekly meeting yesterday, made no change in its minimum rate of discount, but open market quotations for money in London and on the Continent exhibited a firmer tone. As the majority of the best informed Wall Street Interests express great confidence in the future of the stock market, ordinary commission houses are sending out bullish advices to thrir customers, the result of which is a mnre active demand for securities for public account Stock market values have enjoyed marked improve ment from the low flgurrs recorded last week and apparently vigorous efforts are being made to establish all issues at a higher ranse espe cially in the case of securities which nr.> now selling at a level which encourages investment buying. In some quarters of the Street it is thought that the recovery from the recent low figures has been too rapid, and that a reaction will develop before a sustained upward move ment begins. Substantial interests have been buying St. Paul, Union Pacific, Canadian Pn'i flc. New York Central. Chesapeake & Ohio Pennsylvania and Pacific Coast stocks, and tiie character of buying in these shares suggests the presence in the market of people who w.-re Im portant factors in the upward movement which practically culminated last January. The fact that these operators are again in the market ought to Inspire great caution on the part of people who favor the short side of speculation GOVERNMENT BONDS. CHESAPEAKE * OHIO DIVIDEND —A move ment Is under way on the part of certain stock holders of the Chesapeake * Ohio to induce the directors of the company to increase the dividend rate, the basis of the demand being the large in crease in the earnings of the company and Its ex cellent prospects for further »alns In the balance of the year. Some of the points made by the stock holders follow: From June 3k 1839. to February 28, 1906. the net income of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad, for the period, applicable to dividends was J14,41a.0f10 out of which there has been paid to the stockholders in dividends $4/*6.000. an amount equal to only 28 per c?nt of the total applicable to dividends, leaving Sio 320 i*Y> or 72 per cent, which has been put back Into the property. In the same period, the Norfolk A Western Railway Company has paid to Its stockholders 51 per cent of the net Income ap plicable to dividends, putting 49 per cent back Into the property. The Baltimore A Ohio Railroad Com pany has paid to its stockholders M per cent of the net income applicable to dividends, putting 46 per cent back into the property, this road having com* from the hands of receivers only on July 1. 1»». The Southern Railway Company ha« paid to its stockholders 65 per cent of th*» net Income ap plicable to dividends, putting 35 per cent back Into the property. Th<» Louisville * Nashville Railroad Company has paid to its stockholders 63 per cent of the net income applicable to dividends, putting; 47 per cent back into the property. Should the current rate of earnings of the CTiesapeake ft Ohio Railroad as shown herein, continue to the end of this fiscal year, of which there appears to be rea sonable assurance, the present rate of dividend of 1 per cent a year would represent only 13 per cent of the net Income applicable to dividends. CORN PRODUCTS REFINING— The statement of tlip Corn Products Refining Company for the current fiscal year will reflect the change in the management of the corporation. The directors meet next month to consider the payment of dividends on the preferred. The be lief prevails that dividends will not be started at that time. It Is the Intention of the new manage ment to place the company In first class condition before beginning prefened dividends. With this object in view, present earnings will be used for extensions, improvements, etc. TIN PLATE.— It Is now figured that the cost of material alone in a box of tin plate of 100 pounds is in the neighborhood of $2 25, not lncludtoig the cost of production.
