» "SALARY DECREASE BIG.' 1 New Fork Ufe Officials Say Mcln tosh's Increase Is Made Up: I Publication la The Tribune yesterday of the fact tint the salary of James H. Mclntosh. genera! solicitor of the ft* York Life, had been Increased to fl^.W-0. brought out the statement from an of- Jlrlal/if the company that, whereas there had been «hisor?e Increase, there had been a general reduc tion In the entire salary list of the company. ns cresating thousands . cf Cellars.. A member of the pollcyholders' movement said that this increase In salary might be used by them In their effort* to overthrow the present manage ment at the coming elections. It was sold yester day that Mr. Mclntosh demanded the Increase, threatening to resign unless he received what he considered his services were worth. One of his ■friends said yesterday: Ram the Insurance scandal *ro»e the work of Mr. Mclnto»h ha* been trebled. He J" **" ll «« hl« nrecrr.t Balarv. It is true he is » lf?* nd /? ■ * JErtdnV but there is also a mutual friendship « tains between him and other members of the board of trustee*. ■ .: _V^ -.".^v-.i ./ : ;> ..■■ i . An official who wculd not allow his name to be used, referring: to the Mclntonh Increase and the large number of decreases, said: AT^ : A\?- Mr. Mclntosh is an able man. and for some time had been doing more work than he^ -.as a « c< »'i*« 1 y Said for. we thought. It api>eared to I b* only a matter of Justice to Increase his salary. It was offl«Xmmee™t throu«h practically «rtJ£ iaJarv list, revised it and made extensive reductions both here and abroad. It was the greatest re trenchment that has ever taken place In this com- JS?v. I canno* name any individual instances but n three o"ses at l«"ast the i*rluction, was great as wa« the increase in the salary of Mr. Mclntosh. Taking into consideration the fact that when Mr. Orr became president the, .alary of that office was Educed fTonr*lOO.««0 to $30.(00 and that save i the •alary formerly paid to George W. Perkins, whose place has not "been filled, the decrease in our dis bursements for salaries is very large. It was pointed out yesterday that the statement of William B. Hornblower that he had been think ing of resigning ever since the investigation of the company was started last summer was somewhat at variance with the fact that he was placed ln the field for renominatlon sometime ago. When the company m-a« seeking proxies, under the Impression that the annual election would be held In April, as formerly, a circular was sent out in which Mr. Hornblower was mentioned, with the other trustees, c* a c?ndidiite for re-election. ' President Peabody of the Mutual said yesterday that he had not yet been summoned to appear be fore the insiiranoe grand Jury. "I received a letter from the District Attorney asking for certain books and papers." he said, "and ordered that what he asked for be sent to him. He can have whatever he wants," Mr Peabody said that :f necessary all the records of the tr.inMctlons of the finance r,->mniltt?e would be laid before the District Attorney. FOUR HURT IN RIOT. Policemen Injured by Stones Thrown by Italian Strikers. In a riot which followed an attempt by about 280 strikers t prevent a dozen men to work laying car •tracks )n Central ' avenue, ' near South 14th' street, Newark, yesterday morning:, four policemen were hurt and eight of the strikers were arrested. The strikers were members of construction gangs em ployed by the Public ■ Service Corporation. • They quit work Wednesday after demanding: more money and shorter hours. Yesterday, after conference among themselves, armed with stones and other heavy missiles, they visited the spot where the work of placing new rails is being carried on. Sot a f hot was fired, but in the rush, the patrol men wielded their clubs to good effect. Only one of the strikers drew a revolver, but it was knocked from his hand as he was about to pull the triccer A shot in that mob, the police said, would have meant a loss of several lives. ' DEALERS LOWER ANTHRACITE PRICES.
