Stock market values were strong in the greater part of the day on an active volume of business, transactions including some purchases for public account and support from the strongest houses in the Street. Evidently it is the intention of the more important interests to work for higher quotations. The declaration of 'a dividend on United States Steel common at this time is, ac cording to some observers, a reflection of the desire of substantial Wall Street 'men to create an active outside demand for securities, while further evidence of the present bull attitude of the leading interests on the market is presented in the reports emanating from well Informed quarters regarding the probability of increased distributions to the stockholders of the Atchi son, Norfolk & Western, Southern Pacific, Ches apeake & Ohio, Pressed Steel Car and a number of other corporations. The word has gone forth that an August bull boom is on, no matter what may happen abroad. Stocks held by the men who bought on the recent decline bonds held by underwriting syndicates and accumulations of securities made last January must be marketed before the autumn, say the holders, and the public is therefore asked to come in at once and relieve Wall Street of its wares. If the public responds there- ought to be a material apprecia tion In prices in the present month, but there are some reasons for the belief that the outsiders have their funds so well employed ln the chan nels of trade that they will not at this high level of values accept the argument that stocks and bonds are at bargain figures. That there was a big short interest in the market was easy to see frum the course cf quotations in the lead ing issues yesterday. The outside demand was not heavy enough to bring about the marked Im provement which was recorded in many stocks, the advance being due to fright on the part of the shorts and well planned and successfully carried out manipulation. [ Opening prices were helped by the strength in j American securities abroad. In the London market there was heavy buying for American account, and quotations advanced, despite the serious outlook in Russia, which was reflected in a further decline In Russian bonds and a gen eral disinclination on the part of foreign traders to take an active interest in the speculative anil Investment markets. The powerful financial in terests in this country, which are now espoused to (ha bull side of the market, find no difficulty in influencing the London market for American securities under certain conditions, but if af fairs in the Russian Empire become so involved gs to make necessary heavy liquidation of secur ities to protect Russian credit American held slocks abroad may be sold in volume large enough to cause a material change in the plans ' of the people who are counting on big gold im ports and a long period of advancing values. This is merely a suggestion. The Russian out look apparently is not being considered seri ously by Wall Street traders, though In certain circles the idea is put forth that perhaps the nervous activity of the larger interests to pro mote a bull speculation at this time is owing to their anxiety to get out of stocks before the storm develops. There are no breakers ahead, according to the bulls, who are now on top of the stock i»ark<-t. and the speculator, they say. who fights the advance is doomed to irretriev able disaster. The magic names of Morgan, Standard Oil. Harriman, -Gates, Hill and other potentates of the Street are being used to at tract buyers, and if nothing untoward happens at home in the next few weeks big things may be accomplished by the buil element. Money rates were unchanged yesterday. Do mestic exchange at Interior points showed no evidence of an Immediate urgent demand from out of town points for currency, yet there was little confidence expressed in well informed banking circles in the theory that the inquiry for funds from the West and South this fall, in cident •-■> the marketing of the crops and gen eral trad..» requirements, will not br- a.-: active as in former years. Interior banks, it is true, an. stronger than they ever have been before, but the employment of money in the channels of trade in more active than ever reported at this «easop., while the harvest demands promise to be larger than in preceding years, owing to the probability of enormous crops. And interior bank balances at This centre are smaller than usually recorded at this period. Furthermore. foreign exchange is now moving against this country, and in the event of continued selling of America]) stocks by European holders there will be little relief tor the money market from for NEW- YORK DAILY TRIBUNE. THURSDAY. AUGUST 2. 1906 dim gold. The Secretary of the Treasury will make more deposits of government funds with the national banks in the autumn, but this operation will merely serve to prevent acute stringency. It will not lower money rates to a level that will induce an active investment or speculative demand for securities on the part of the public. While there were heavy profit selling sales in the afternoon, the general level of prices was well maintained, and at the close quotations were not far from the best figures of the day, with the chief improvement in Amalgamated Copper. American Smelters. Anaconda. Erie, St. Paul. Reading. Union Pacific, United States Steel, Brooklyn Rapid Transit, Great Northern preferred. Delaware & Hudson, National Lead, Missouri Pacific. Northern Pacific, New York Central. Chesapeake & Ohio and Norfolk & Western. Consolidated Gas was weak, supply ing the only soft spot among the leading issues. CHESAPEAKE A OHIO.-The June earnings of the Chesapeake A Ohio, with increases of $350,000 in gross and $195,000 in net. make the fiscal year show up even better than had been expected some months ago. Aside from making a gain of $3,378,000 in gross earnings, the road was operated for 60.4 per cent of gross, as compared with «3.9 per cent the year before. The preceding year fixed charges, taxes and other deduction amounted to $4,779,050, not including payments on tne principal of car trusts. It is not likely that charges will rise above $4,900,000 for the last fiscal year, in which case a surplus can be figured out equivalent to 8 per cent on the $S2.SOO,<KO stock, against 4.57 per cent In the preceding year. UNITED STATES STEEL.— director of the United States Steel Corporation says: The amount of money set aside out of earnings up to June 30. 190*. is sufficient to cover all th« expenditures that will be made on the new steel plant at Gary during this year and 1907.
