12 Of Interest J» «> to Women. TROWMART I\X OPEXS. // duest* at Women's Hotel on First Day. The Trowmart Inn. the new hotel for working women to Abingdon Square, formally opened Its doors yesterday with fifty guests. The Inn has been open for several days for registration . and one young woman was so anxious to be the flrst to register that she came «t 7 o'clock or; the morning of the first registra tion day. "Oh. if you could only see the dreadful place I hare been Jiving- in," she said, "and paying $7 & week. This is paradise, simply paradise. Every one who wanted a room was obliged to come and apply for it after the inn opened, and then it was a case of first come, flrst served, while no applications were received except from those who were prepared to occupy their rooms Immediately. A considerable amount of trouble was experienced with the age limit. No woman over thirty-five is admitted to this paradise, and «\ good many such applied for rooms. One was obviously approaching the allotted span of man's or woman's life, and when told that she could not be admitted she Indignantly declared that ■he would write to Mr. Martin about It. Pets were another difficulty. Young women othewise eligible declined to be separated from a beloved bird, cat, dog or parrot. None of these animals, no matter how exemplary their lives, can be admitted to this earthly paradise. Most of the forty guests wljp took possession of their rooms yesterday are between the ages of seventeen and twenty-two, and represent a wide variety of occupations. There are stenog raphers, secretaries, designers and employes of department stores, publishing nouses and a large electrical firm. They are an attractive looking group of young women. Most of them are nicely dressed and speak good English, and some are very pretty. The hotel is furnished with great simplicity, but no expense has been spared in anything per taining: to comfort or ease of operation. The kitchen is said 10 be unsurpassed in any hotel In the city, and the cook, who has worked in several large hotels, pays she never saw any thing like it. Everything is as near fireproof and dust proof as it can be made. Even the Upper corners of thf rooms are rounded so that they will not catch dust. All the floors are bare, of either wood, cement or mosaic, but in the bed rooms and parlors they are liberally supplied with rups. The walls are tinted a light tan, and there are simple, white muslin curtains at the windows. The furniture is all simple in line but perfect in workmanship, and there is a fine piano in the largo drawing room. The tables in the dining room are of polished mahogany, and are to be used without tablecloths. The bedrooms are necessarily small, but every Inch of space is utilized. The singie rooms con tain a little iron bed. a dresser, a chair and writing tahi^. a vashsiand. and a large closet, with the hooks distributed on the under sur face of a larger shelf, instead of being placed around the wall, in the usual way. The doctor's office and library are at the left of the entrance, and over the room clerk's desk is a stained glass window, with an angel head, the features being those of Trowbridge Martin, the little boy in whose memory the inn was built The room clerk is a woman, and so is the "elevator boy." The housekeeper, Mrs. Shep herd, formerly occupied a similar position at the West Side Settlement of the Young .Women's Christian Association, and is not in the least afraid of assuming the management of three hundred pirls. The rates for board are 94 30 a week for two in a room, and $5 where a single room is occupied. This covers two meals a day. and 13 cents will he charged for the third meal on Sundays and holidays. \/NSh!N& GOOD CHEE2. Have you had a kindness shown? Pass it en. There are sounds of summer that importune, Teeming, insistent Insect life, Rhythmical, ceaseless, rank and rife; ■ . But the spirit of summer finds its. word IThere the tiger lilies are drowsily stirred Sy the hum and th* hum of the hunfrming bird in the heart of an August noon. —Elizabeth Woodbridge in The Outlook.
