"Oh. my! but aren't women" — she cast around for an appropriate adjective "tiresome?" Sh« was ■ hotel clerk. And the hotel was a woman* hotel. Every hotel clerk is a target frr absurd unnecessary questions, but the woman cjnk of a woman's hotel is made to feel fifty times a day that she is the very bull's-eye of the target. Travellers abroad, it is said, go to their con sul "when they have lost their money, their friends or their heads." In this country they go to the hotel clerk. When the traveller happens to be a woman ar.fi the t'erk Is a woman, too, then the sup poeod community of feeling between the guest and h.er sister behind the desk gives rise to A •eritrs nf demands and questions that not even the most g:ltt-d of her aex can be expected to meet. "So woman on her nn'.ive heath would ask the postman what to wear, or the grocer how to gt-t a i-csition as inspector of schools," wailed •re of these long suffering individuals. "I won der what makes them ask me? "Women seem to drop their reasoning powers the minute they leave home," she went on. •Mentally they flop. They forget that . such thine* "3 a directory or a telephone exist: they absolutely refuse to use their brains— then they come to me." She sighed. ■ — r " The confidence of the average woman traveller tn tha omniscience of the hotel clerk is touching or comic, whichever way you like to look at it. A sample day in the hotel will contain ques tions like these: •When does the matinee begin at the-theatre?" The inquirer has a daily paper in her hand, but has not thought to look at it. .. "Where can I adopt a baby?" "Where can I learn to carve?" A distract t-d -<rl says she finds she has put her mother -.. the wrong train.' and wants the cl*-r« to do • thing- about it at once. Another girl wants to know how much news puprrs pay a column, and another where to place fcni ;ied bed sliiij»ers in St. Louis. The woman v. ho has lost her pocketuook is a not uncommon caller. The pocketbook in trarlably contains all her money and her ticket home. . . . - ... "I kiiow l.lust it on the streetcars," she moans. But she has not thought to look for it at the lest an<3 found office of the cojnpany, and her only solution of the difficulty is to borrow of the air.iaijlo clerk. When she is told of the possibility of finding it by applying for it at the proper place and of the further possibility of sending a telegram "Co!!eci" to her nearest friend, asking for money, her face lights up perceptibly. Stories of great distress are, unfortunately, not ruse. Strangers who have failed to find their friends, who have met with accidents, or •u-ho bare Leon unable to get the employment for whkh they came are sorely in a hard place in a city. Especially at night do such difficul ties appear very, perplexing. The clerk finds. moreover, that th* moft plausible ?tory may have not a word of truth in it. while, on the other hand, the wildest may be capable of proof, word for word. Nor are the clerk's troubles over when, turn ing from the procession of strange faces that passes before her. like a never ending roll of moving pictures, with a confusing foreground of bags ar.d s-ha wist raps, ehe begins to open her mail. Here she finds herself confronted by questions quite as sil'y and quite as puzzling to answer. "Some years ago," writes one woman, "I boarded on ■■ ' ■ street ■ with a lady whoa* r.ame began 'with R and J had"'-tvv6~",syllal3lesr"'l rvnember that some one In your office, gave me ihe address, and I would be obliged If you would fer.(3 It to me again. *• ....... A mother writes: "You must see many trav ellers. Do you suppose that you could find some o::e who would take my baby from here to its Bunt :n New Orleans, if I paid her fare?" Oddly enough, a candidate for the baby ap jx-ared the very day that letter arrived. V/^J^CjJ) "Why is it that women so often insist on wear ir.g enrs^ts that are too small for them?" asked a S2.kpworr.an in the corset department of a big &ei,2.nr.:er.t store the other day. "No woman can hope to look smart with too email a corset. In the effort to : .ok smart she will simply make herself look rediculous and ruin her figure Into tha bargain. I have found a marked tendency on the r art of my customers to insist on small corsets, wlu-reas often a size larger even than the r<r.e I recommend for them would produce a bt-tir-r tff^ct. Pew women — terribly few! — have perfect, or <*yen good, figures. They nearly e!1 need to have their figures made for them. A corset just as large as they can wear makes th» :r fiiure? far more successful for them than f.r:e th.:i r.:;,^ end pinches." • kern the problem of living so terr'.i.!y lays in a big city like New York." - ttM young matrons waa saving, "is .c to choose between the essentials .iles. Sir: I have read your editorial to-day in regard to poisoning with great interest, having been suf fering with the same for a good rrihny years There is a road up here In Rye called Milton avenue, on which there is enough poison Ivy to poison the whole state of Xew York, but nothing is ever done to cut It out. I have- spent a good deal of money for doctors and medicine, and have come to the conclusion that there Is only one cure for this poisoning:, tfirit is powdered bismuth. I have ref-nmmendod it to many rereons up here ■ suffering from the malady, and they have all agreed that it is the only remedy thru keeps the rash from spreading and heals it in a few days. MOXl>r-r. AUGUST 13. 1!M>«. J FRESH AIR ARMY. More than 2,000 Children* Tran sported to and from Country. Fifty-eight different . towns, scattered through, five different states, received the children sent out last week by the Tribune Fresh Air Fund. Alto gether these children would have formed a small army of 1,176. Scattered as they are. they are not only filling themselves with the health and strength which come to them in the country, but they are acting the part of missionaries for the good of Fresh Air work in the future. In some towns the interest In Fresh Air work is kept up entirely by the children themselves, who give entertainments and bring the work before the people in other ways. " In Middletown and Goshcn, where the people pro vide for the entertainment of twenty-five convales cent children for the summer, the boys and girls gave an entertainment last week that netted more than $50. It was at first proposed to give it only in the afternoon, but. by special request, it was re peated in the evening, and the hall was crowded. Those places to which the 1.176 children sent out last week went ere: Interlaken. Mass.; Shokan. . Arkvillo . and Ardsley, N. V.; Milton, Conn.; Sche nectady. N. V. ; Chapel Hill, N. J. ; Fairfleld. Besides these there were thirty-seven other places that returned children to the city after a two weeks' visit. The children returned to the city numbered 1.319. This makes ninety-five places that were concerned in the movement of Tribune Fresh Air children last week, while the total num ber of children which the railroads carried comes up to the large total of 2.-ISS. Two weeks of country air had worked a wonder iwl transformation in some of the thirteen hundred children who came back. A Brooklyn missionary told the following: Would you believe that in that party which came back from -Bradford there was one child who was so changed that her own mother did not know her? When 1 sent her out I found her pitifully wt-uk and thin and dressed in such ran that 1 h;id to llx her up myself before she coul.l go. While at Brad ford the country air seemed to be just what she needed, atui she gained "in flesh rapidly. Before she returned the woman with whom she stayed gave her v pretty new dross, which she wore home, and flx«-d her hair ui> prettier than it hud f-v«>r been before. When the children reached the station the mother looked over the group and said: "1 don't s<i-e Anna, where is she? Another missionary told of a girl of seven who returned from her vacation looking like anotl et child. Small us she was, before going away she had been acting as janitor of the house in which she lived, and was completely worn oat. She came back fairly transformed, botli in body and spirit.
