The selling movement was. due to realizing and bear pressure and to an apparent disposition on the part of the larger interests to encourage a quieter speculation owing to the danger signals displayed in the money marke^, call funds advancing to G per cent. There was no change in sentiment over the future of values, but it was thought that a reactionary tendency might be the chief feature in the next few days, a movement which would tend to strengthen the position of the market by eliminating the weak accounts which have been established in the last week. The Hill shares. Union Pacific and the United States Steel stocks were the interesting features In yesterday's trading, particularly Steel common, which sold above 40. and of which it was said a price of more than 50 would be reached based on the expectation that the issues soon will be placed on a straight 4 per cent divi dend level. Amalgamated Copper. Anaconda, Great Northern preferred, Missouri Pacific and Steel common closed at net gains, but elsewhere in the active list -losses were recorded. There was a material falling off in the total of busi- ' ness as compared with the first two days of the week, due both to a lighter volume of public operations and to smaller transactions on the part of the substantial market interests. A hardening tendency is noted in the call money market, which apparently foreshadows a much higher level in the near future. The prob ability of a long period of stiff rates for funds does not worry the Wall Street community to any important degree, but it is conceivable that in the event of acute stringency it will be neces sary to call a halt in stock market speculation for a time at least, inasmuch as the banks will not be In a position to finance the heavy de mands incident to the handling of the crops and demands from speculators at the same time, owing to the low position of the bank reserves at this centre. Of course, the chances favor assistance through the foreign exchange mar ket, while in the event of actual disturbance government funds doubtless will be placed at the disposal of the banks, but these measures will merely serve to offset the heavy withdrawal of currency for interior account rather than supplying a fund for the use of stock market operators. Fortunately for the speculative sit uation most of the large commission houses are supplied with time money to run over the year and if speculation is held in check there ought to be no great amount of liquidation in securi ties, while a pause in speculation at this period will insure greater activity when money begins to move toward New York. That there will be a large movement of money to this centre after the fall demands of the interior have been satis fled is foreshadowed by the large number of buyers who are now in New York fining enor mous requirements for the autumn season. Purchases now being made In all lines for future delivery are heavy, and payments to New York will be correspondingly large. There is no indication of a setback in trade prosperity In the near future; indeed, all reports from mer cantile sources suggest the probability of another twelve months of the business expansion. Nat urally, the sound position of trade in the United States and the promise of about the largest wheat and corn crops on record encourage specu lative activity In all markets, and there Is some uneasiness in conservative circles owing to the idea that speculation may be carried to an extent which may result in disaster. This view of tho outlook, however, is not popular in Wall Street quarters, especially as the larger interests are diligently working to bring about higher quota tions for stocks In order to distribute at profit able figures a part, at least, of their heavy ac cumulations of securities. Public activity prom ises to continue Just as long as the more im portant banking and railroad interests continue ( to assert their belief in the theory of higher ) prices, based on growing earnings among cor porations. Increased dividends and the establish ment In the investment column of stocks which have never paid dividends. It is generally under stood that the present dividend era, which Ib the outgrowth of years of careful corporate management backed by favorable natural con ditions, will run on for many months to come. Selling represented realitlng opera tions. In London consols were heavy and the gen eral market was Inactive. Money was in fair de mand on account of the heavy dividend disburse ments by the railroads, and discounts were firm. The Continental bourses were featureless. MONEY AND GOLD IMPORTS.-Tim* money for all periods from sixty days lent at « per cent yesterday and furnished bear operators In stocks an argument against higher prices. Call money also advanced, lending as high as 6 per cent. Kuhn. Lo«b * Co. put out J2.000.000 at 5 per cent. Sterling exchange was quoted at 4.84»§4.**45 f»r demand, the point at which gold could be imported. Probably the absence of engagements was due to the limited supply of th« metal available In the London mar ket. Next week there will be |5.000.«»» of South African gold in the market, and the chances are that New York will get the greater part. Local banks have lost on Bub-Treasury operations so far this week more than $4,000,000. WHEAT MARKET AND WEATHER.— Wheat was strong on the Produce Exchange, the ad vance being influenced by apprehension regarding the spring wheat crop. Damage reports were rather numerous, although probably «xaggerated. The offerings of spring wheat have not yet assumed any volume and this is realised by the traders who have sold In anticipation. Idea is expressed by some of the best interests that of regular grades of spring wheat the crop will be only about as needed for the requirements of the country, owing to the in creased crop of macaroni. Bids on wheat for ax port did not respond to the recent American strength, and while firmer wer« not up to our ad vance. DIVIDENDS DECLARED.— The directors <^f the Railway Steel Spring Company have declared the regular quarterly dividend of I*4 per cent on the preferred stock, payable September 20. THE COPPER MARKET.— A representative of the leading copper producing interest in the coun try said: Aside from the advance In spot copper at London, there Is no change In the condition of the copper market. The tone la firm, with every element entering into the price entirely sound. You don't hear of any great amount of new business being placed, because producers have sold their entire output to the end of th«-. year or longer. I hr.ye little doubt that 1907 will turn out to be the btggt-st year for copper production ard sales that the coun try has had. STANDARD CORDAGE COMPANY— The new securities of the Standard Cordage- Company will be ready for delivery on and after September 5 at the Equitable Trust Company. Scrip (amounts under $100) will not be Issued.
