V£ STATE'S CASE CLOSED. Broutcer Defence Promises to Prove Ptomaines Caused Death. Toms River. K. J.. Oct. 11 .Special) — The state closed Its case here to-day against Dr. Brouw*>r. Indicted on a charge of murdering his wife. The general opinion among the lawyers attending the trial seems to be that little direct evidence against Brouwer Las been adduced. * Dr. Walter S. Washington, an expert chemist of New York, was the flrst witness put on the stand by the prosecution. Ho iraa asked a hypothetical Question, which, after summing up the main points of the testimony given by the doctors and nurses who had been called to the witness stand by the prosecution, asked what in his oplnon was the cause of the death In such a case. He answered promptly "•arsenical poisoning." Isaac D. White, the last witness called by the Plate. testified that Dr. Brouwer had told him that Airs. Brouwer was jealous of Miss Stella M■- Clenahan. After the state had rrstrd tn? lawyers held a eoripultatirtrt as to the advisability of presenting arataessss for the defence, ami' when St was de cided to continue the case Mr. Carralchael made the opening address in behalf of the prisoner. He eaid it would be sboera that ptomaine poisoning oav.sed Mrs. l-Irouirer's death. .... -We will produce evidence." Mr. Carmichael de clared, -that the woman had ail the symptoms of acute indigestion, that she had severe pains in the stomach and that she suffered from those pains up to the time of her death. We will show that her death resulted from ptomaine poisoning. We will ftiow that there was no ground glass In the woman's body until aft<»r her death; and that only one-twentieth of a grain of arsenic was found in "Miss Stella McClenahan was then called as the first witness for the defence. She said that Dr. Brouwer had treated her tot an ailment previous to the death of bis wife. About a month after Mrs. I .o »ers death the doctor had asked her to come to his home and take) care of his children. She con sented and remained for six weeks in the dorters home. During that time she never went out walk ing or riding with Dr Broi « l>.R-;ird J. Wosthall. an undertaker, said he u«d fluid with no arsenic in embalming the body of Mi Brouwer. The apparatus had been used In other cases for a year or more, and when embalming a body he used thrift different kinds of embalming fluid. Dr J<-.!:n Mar« . rrofesscr of chemistry in tn» University of Pennsylvania, testified that h« had aruilyzed embalming fluid which he had been in formed was similar to that used in embalming Mrs. Brouwer's body and found that it contained no arsenic. He al*o analyzed two other kinds of fluid end found that they were composed largely c ' arsenic He was taced whether Jars, such as were mm to hold the Intestines taken from Mrs. Broviwer s body. ■»•»"-« new. there might not be particles of glass in thnoai and he replied affirmatively. He raid that the jars had ground glass tops, and particles might fall into the- jar. He had exammea six jars, he said, and In four of them he had found nieces of gas« similar to th* piece* that had been found by Professor Oenth.. He made an *xperl m<-m by putting fifteen pieces of ground glass In a two quart jar and th^n washing out the Jar with water three times. He said li» used a pint of ■water each lime, and threw out the water after rinsins the Jar well, and after doing all this he had recovered from the sides and bottom of the Jar *leven of the pieces of glass, only four pieces having been carri-d oft by th« water.
