"The Iron Axe ' i October was a record breaking month, so far as the production of pl«? Iron Is concerned. The out put of coHe and anthracite Iron for the thirty-one days was 2,196.606 pross tons, against '-',165,632 tons in March of this year and 1.970,062 tons in Septem ber, these totals being exclusive of charcoal pis Iron. The greater part of the Increase in the out put of October over September was contributed by the steel companies, which reached the tremendous total of 1,432,1*00 tons, as contrasted with 1.264.350 tons In September. The high output is reflected in the estimates of capacity of the furnaces in blast on the first of this month, when they were running at the rate of over 600.000 tons a we?k, the first time that that mark has ever been passed in the history of the American iron Industry. And yet, with our plants running at the rate of over 16,000.000 tons a year, there 1b a scarcity of metal all over th© country, and foreign Iron is reaching our shores in many cargoes every week. A considerable num ber of cargoes of foreign pig Iron have been pur chased abroad for American account, and the mar ket Is taking the metal freely. a disposition la de veloping to buy foreign iron for forward delivery, and Iron cannot now be obtained by liners unless it be for delivery next year. The marked differ ence in this situation now and during the former import movements is that the spread between for eign and domestic iron is much smaller. It was as much as $3 and $4 a ton when the last considerable quantities were imported. Taking Into account the cost of handling and delivering the foreign pig iron from the vessel's Bide to the regular routes of transportation, there is now little difference in the cost of foreign and domestic pig Iron.
