STOCK MARKET OPERATIONS.
On a moderately active volume of business
stock market values moved in the direction of
higher prices In the greater part of the day, the
only period of reaction being in the last half
hour of trading, win on profit taking pales
prices declined fractionally from their best 11*7
ures. Last quotations showed a long: list of net
gains, with the chief Improvement In American
Locomotive, Central Leather, Erie first pre
ferred, Great Northern. Missouri. Kansas &
Texas, Reading:, Union Pacific. United Statns
Steel and the copper shares. Anaconda made a
new high record at 302% on a heavy volume of
trading, buying of the issue being baaed on the
known strong; market position of the stock and
on the strength of the copper market situation;
while for the same reasons Amalgamated was
taken in large quantities, as were also tho cop
per shares In the Boston market. Including Cal
umet & Hecla, which advanced 30 poll to
$1,000 a phare, the best price over made by the
issue. Active buying of Missouri. Kansas &
Texas was accompanied by the report that v
dividend would be declared on the stork in the
near future, but an officer of the company sub
sequently was quoted to the effect that It would
be two years at least before the common stock
would receive a payment, this being In lino with
the road' 3 known policy of conservatism, as In
stanced In the case of the preferred, which only
recently was placed in the dividend column, de
ejiite the fact that tho earnings for a number
of years were large enough to pay something to
the holders of the issue. In the morning opera
tions Missouri Pacific again was under bear
pressure, Lut the decline appeared to bring In
some support from Gould Interests. The most
noteworthy news development of the day was
the announcement that the New York, New
Haven & Hartford Railroad Company had sold
to a prominent banking house $28,000,000 de
benture securities of a fifteen-year maturity at
4 per cent, to be placed entirely road. This
is the first instancs of a long term issue of
securities being placed in many months, and
the fact that the entire amount will be ab
sorbed by foreign capital is of particular interest
in view of the steady buying for European ac
count on the local Stock Exchange in the last
few weeks, and the purchase of recent offerings
at short term railroad notes by London. With
a trade balance in this country's favor and with
Europe taking our securities, it is not surprising
that sterling exchange market conditions fore
shadow further shipments of gold to this side
of the ocean.
road earnings for the first week In l">b
i ...ti v which have been received in the last few
In many Instances declines, as com
with the favorable returns for th» corre
sponding period a year ago. These adverse r^
sults, however, do not represent the development
of weakness In the general trade situation or
unsettleraenl In the country's busl
■ ■ losses from this time in Iltm;.
• indicating the decline In traffic due to
the unfavorable weather conditions prevailing
in certain parts of the country- I" t!; ( - Bourn
and .v. v are keeping tip well;
Indeed, as a rule, gains are shown over the large
receipts of ;i year ago, but In the Wei
■. ost and In sectjons tributary snow
storms of unusual magnitude have seriously ln
! with the handling of trains with a
consequent Imps In gross income, mid an Increase
ln operating charges. The earninsr rower of
certain roads has been temporarily lessened, but
It Is not likely that the reduction in receipts, as
reported In January, and so far in the current
month, win materially affect the total results
of the year. Even with the great difficulties
wtth which many roads Have neon forced to
contend In recent weeks, earnings In moat in
stances nave heen above those reported in the
same time two years ago, and In the p'>«:tiori of
the country's business there Is nothing upon
which on* may base a prediction thftt from now
on earnings of our transportation companies
will tend toward smaller totals. As a fact, there
Is no suggestion in the various conditions af
fecting the business situation in the United
States of coming serious reaction.
A largo short interest in stocks la not always
a safo argument for higher prices; Indeed, nine
times out of ten the expectation of a prolonged
bull speculation founded upon an extended
short account is not fulfilled, and bearing this
ln mind It may be well for enthusiastic traders
of bullish proclivities not to place too much con
fldance in the theory that, as there Is now a big
bear account In the market, prices are bound
to move toward a higher level In tho cour»e of
the next few months. The idea that stocks may
go lower is keeping many people out of the mar
ket, and the fact that such Issues as Union

are difficult to "bull,*' while celling off on the
slightest pressure; encourages this opinion. The
Gould stocks have '.<.<> leader, as far as their
speculative position Is concerned, hp.:l trailers
have no trouble In depressing them, as evi
denced In the movement of Missouri Pacific In
the last few days. This lock Is a 5 per cent
issue, selling at its current price to yield well
above 5 per cent, and the fr.ct that !t is bo low
creates the Imprc?si«in in some quarters mat the
company is about to do some financing on a
large scale, and perhaps reduce f.ie dividend,
