STOCK MAEKET OPERATIONS.
The, process of squeezinj; certain enthusiastic
but not ovfrwise operator* who persistently
have remained short of the market 011 the
theory that stocks could not advance under
present conditions continued yesterday, a re
flection of which was presented In a long list
of substantial gains at the close. It was not
mere rumor that the shorts were being pun
ished. It was a fact known to the greater
number of Wall Street observers that powerful
speculative Interests v.Un have the backing of
large financial resources were exercising their
talents to brine about higher prices at the ex
pense of the short account, especially in Ca
nadian Pacific, which at Its high price of th*
day showed a gain of 34? i points from its low
price of March '211, the low record of the year.
Union Pacific was another issue tri which the
shorts suffered to a large extent, and it was
said la well Informed quarters that further dam
age would be done to the speculators who sold
the stock for a decline when prices in general
recently were s«raplnff on bottom. The market's
strength depended entirely on its speculative
position and not on the silly reports which were
heard early in the day, Intimating that the
President would issue a statement show an
entire change In his position regarding the rail
roads and railroad legislation. And the fact
that the market did not decline when a state
ment was put forth shortly before the close of
buslneßS Indicating that the President had not
changed his views to the slightest extent and
that he would "stand pat" on all his announced
policies as contained in his messages and
speeches also confirmed the general Impression
that It was not a market that could be influ
enced by outside factors. Such developments
may be more influential to-day, but the fact that
President Roosevelt has no intention of adopting
a new policy on the railroad question ought not
to hurt values, especially as it is announced
officially that the President does not advocate
and never has advocated the physical valuation
of railroads as understood by Wall Street. At
the last session of Congress the President asked
for power to deal with the question of overcap
italization of corporation?, and the chances are
that such power will be accorded next winter
when the new Congress assembles. The. country
at large will back such a request, and Wall
Street by that time doubtless will have become
accustomed to the idea. The volume of business
In the five hours of trading exceeded 1,000,000
shares, with the heaviest operations in Amal
gamated Copper, American Smelting, Canadian
Pacific, Atcbison, St. Paul. Pennsylvania, Read
ing, Southern Pacific, Union Pacific and the
United States Steel share?. '
Wall Street's representative Investment houses
report a better demand for first class stocks and
bonds, and it is quite generally believed that
this buying movement will run on until prices
go to a materially higher level. The greater num
ber of dividend paying stocks and interest bear-
Ing bonds are quoted at figures that make them
extremely attractive as investment purchases,
and now that it is recognized that the recent
disturbance in Wall Street was not due to any
weakness in conditions underlying the business
or financial situation and did not foreshadow
the development of hard times it la not unlikely
that many people, who a few days ago were
unwilling to place their funds In the invest
ment markets, owing to groundless fears over
the industrial outlook, will be anxious to come
into the Street both for Investment and specu
lative account: Convertible bonds which have
1 declined to a basis returning an inviting yield
are becoming more popular, and purchases are
ing made in same volume by conservative
operators, who hay* in mind the fact that the
value of these securities Is bound to enhance
with any improvement that may take place in
the Mocks Into which they are convertible.
Such Ueucs as the Delaware & Hudson con
vertible 4.«, the Pennsylvania convertible SMn
and the Atchlson convertible 4* are in demand
at current prices, which are far unde • the best
quotations of the year. The level upon which
these bonds are now soiling Is ridiculously
cheap, in view of the cltaracter of the security
and their convertible feature, while throughout
the list of regular mortgage Issues there will be
found an array of bargains seldom presented In
the history of the Investment market.
Call money rates were relatively easy yester-
itfEW-YORK DAILY TRTHrVF. TT K>DAT. :\rKTT: 2. 1907
day. The improvement In the local bank re
serves, as shown In Saturday's statement of
the Clearing: House, insures comparatively
cheap money for some time, to come, a
prospect which doubtless will encourage
bull demonstrations in the stock market
and induce greater caution among- the oper
ators who have been making: profits on the bear
side of speculation. The course of trading last
Friday and yesterday sngaTests that the bears
are not in a position to .shape the movement of
values entirely to suit themselves: It shows
that there are now two sides to the market, and
that it will he a risky performance in the im
mediate future to put out large short lines
with nothing 1 substantial in the way of adverse
news on the intrinsic value of stocks to back
such operations. Apparently, "Wall Street has
recovered its nerve, and no longer Is afraid of
mere rumors. Moreover, forced liquidation ap
pears to have reached Its limit, and without
liquidation of this sort further important head
way in the direction of lower prices Is not likely
to result from short sales. Short sales at this
time are dangerous, because there has been a
great shrinkage in the amount, of stock avail
able for speculative purposes, an example of
which was presented in the operations on Friday
and yesterday In Canadian Pacific. Many oper
ators who have made malodorous records in re
cent weeks by working to upset the confidence
of investors in order to secure profits on the
I bear side of the market are still heavily in
volved In contracts that call for the delivery of
Stock, and it may come to pass that considerable
difficulty v.ill be experienced in settling.
