Activity in yfsterday'B stock market was con fined to a few shares, but in the general list prices were strong, despite the fact that there was no outside response to the speculative buy- Ing movement in Union Pacific, the copper shares, Heading and Southern Pacific. Union Pacific was again the chirf feature of interest and the sharp advance in the preferred natur ally attracted attention to the various rumors afloat regarding the company and intensified the belief that matters of material importance to the stockholders of the Union Pacific company were being discussed by the management, par ticularly in regard to the company's holdings of the securities of other roads. The advance in the preferred, the first movement of Importance in this-: issue in several years, created the im preuion that there would be a distribution of the assets of the Union Pacific company In which the preferred holders would share with the common, while it was reported on circum stantial grounds that the company would or ganize a banking corporation to take over the stock interests of Union Pacific in Southern Pa cific and other companies. The preferred en- Joyed a maximum gain of more than 7 point*, while the common advanced 4 points, with its last price at a net gain of K 7 » points. The strength in the copper shares followed the ad vance in the Rio Tlrito issues abroad, and the character of the buying suggested accumulation by important market interests who baaed their operations on the strong position of the metal at home and in Kurope. Rio Tlnto shares nave enjoyed an advance of 525 a share in the la^t few days, and it is pointed out by interests Iden tified with the Amalgamated and Anaconda companies that the stocks of these two concerns are remarkably cheap in comparison with Rio Tinto. I>ast prices in the general list were strong at about the best figures of the day. In many banking houses objection is made to the Atchison's bond plan on the theory that the f» per cent rate on the new issue will make it More difficult to sell the old 4s. hut this ap parently does not bother the Atchison manage ment, which points to the fact that the grf-at'-r part of the former issue has been sold to tin stockholders iiiid that as long as the latter an willing to take the bonds the company need not concern itself with the complaints of bond deal ers. The now bonds are of a short maturity with the conversion privilege limited to the next six years, and It therefore may be assumed thai the directors believe all high clam Investments will sell on a lower Income basis in that time, an idea which is quite generally held In con servative investment circles, though the quali fication is made that prit es for securities In general may until after the next Presidential election average a u-v»-i which will return as much as. if not more than, that which can \,(- ob tained at present. Prices for most securities in the Investment class an? abnormally cheap and the yield correspondingly high, and in view of the soundness of the conditions governing Investment values such a situation would be dif ficult to explain on any theory other than that vested rights In this country are in danger i>: collapse wera it known that the speculative movermnts of the last two years are respon sible lor the big decline that has taken place in solid Investment securities, as well as in those "f a wholly speculative character. Market wiso good stocks have been injured with the bad, but In trinsic values have not been damaged. To re turn to Atchison, it is Interesting to note that though the system has Increased its mileage by '*) per cent since the organization of iij». present company. Its total capitalization a mile has decreased, atui even if there should be no in crease in the mil obit in the next twelve months, the time in which paymnts on the pew bonds will be made, the total capitalization at the end fit' this period would only \,o $53,300 a mile. Bo fnr in the current week the local banks have lost on their operations With the Sub- TreaSUry l'-s* than Sl.<KK>.oo<». while it is esti mated the shipments to the inteti,,r have been lighter than reported a week ago. Unless, thero fore, there has been a large expansion in the loans, to- nor low's Clearing House statement Might not to show a material falling off to the reserve above legal requirements, though this item may be affected by the week's operations in connection with the May interest and divi dend disbursements. At its weekly meeting yes terday the Bank of England made no change la its discount rate, th<- movement of holdings in the week not warranting a reduction, which in T^ondon financial quarters had been hoped for. Reserve declined £S."/<MXK), but the proportion of reserve to liability was much more favorable tha.il at the corresponding ilme last year. Mun, y conditions in London are strong enough to per mit withdrawals of gold for J J aris account; in Paris the situation is better than it has l.een In months, while lhe same may be said of con ditions in Berlin. In the United States financial conditions throughout the country are strongei than they have been for ;i year or more, both as regards the position of the open money market and th< federal Treasury, and tor th« informa tion of ppoplo who are ur.rasy over the situation here it Is worth reporting that New York soon ■ .. ■ a lar^e lender of funda in London. In London the general market was dull i The British money market was quiet at unchanged* quotation!., but there was a good demand for jun3 bills at 2% per cent. The uncertainty regardhiJ the French gold requirements was responsible fo*J the absence of demand for hills of long maturity*,! At the Continental centres there were no move? ments of importance in stocks and money MARKET GOSSIP -Interests Identified with W Amalgamated and Anaconda copper companies ar»< buying the stocks, and traders whose information! comes from inside sources # a re bullish on the issue. The consumption of copper proceeds on an enor mous scale, and, according to D. Houston & Co j the well known copper firm, consumers are takin the metal with a regularity that indicates a health ful trade situation at the various industrial plants j where the melting down operations are carried on. The foreign shorts In th* metal ar* making ' progress In their campaign against price*, and «cli : •rs of Rio Tinto shares In London and Paris are it is believed, digging a pit for themselves rather than for the Interests which are buying copper shares on trade conditions. There nppears to be something «C a stale bull account In the local market for stocks 1 and Its liquidation prevents the maintenance of rallies for any length of time. Nevertheless, moss* houses advise purchases on weak spots. Crop con ditions are not as favorable a* recently Indicated' . by government reports, and the percentage state- 1 ment of condition which will be Issued on tbe iotl»' of th» current month undoubtedly will show a ma-j terlal decline, as compared with a month ago. Tot" winter wheat, and In view of this probability tha> stock market hardly will run into a bull affair at present. Grain houses believe there will be am' enormous speculation In wheat this year, and thas> the course of the grain market sill be an lmpor«j tant factor in shaping th« movements on the Stoclej Exchange. New York Central stock Is not moving)' in a manner acceptable to the bulls on the Issue, but Its Intrinsic value Is not decreasing, a reflectioaj of which Is presented In Its steady but quiet ab sorption by Investors. The Vanderbllt and Rocke feller interests are doing nothing to make the stock! a speculative leader, and it is a noteworthy fact that in the last seven weeks the weekly average' dealings in it have amounted to only a trifle more. than 33.000 shares. The New York Central has; $72, •**.<¥>•> of stock authorized, but yet unissued. It circumstances should allow, there Is no doubt bust that the management would use this stock for tn« financing that cannot be postponed beyond the en I of the year. The preparation of a plan for th* ! Issuance of equipment trust securities provides th« management with an alternative course, but proba bly the one would have no more favorable effect upon the market position of the stock than the) other. Union Pacific's activity foreshadows lm.i portant financial operations by the company. whle.V are discussed In another column of The Tribune.
