Of the total transactions in yesterday's stock market, amounting to eomethlnK more than SOfi.ooo shares, about three-quarters or the busi ness represented the dealings In ten issues. Union Pacific and Reading being the most con spicuous features. Though trading was centred to a great extent in a few securities, there was evidence of a wider interest in the market, a reflection of which was presented In operations on a moderate scale in stocks which of late have been practically Inactive and in the pen era! advancing tendency which was recorded throughout the list in the best part of the day, final declines being due to realizing sales and renewed pressure from the shorts on the ex haustion of the early buying . In the last hour Amalgamated Copper. American Smelting, St. Paul. New York Central. Reading and Union Pacific sold down a point or more from their high points, but In the case of Reading much of the loss wag recovered Just before the close on renewed buying: from the trading element. The morning's advance was conducted in the face of adverse reports from the crop section of the country for winter wheat and cotton, trading evidently brine: based on the; theory that sub stantial Interests were a' cumulating stocks, especially In the Harriman shares and Brooklyn Rapid Transit, the latter issue hoir.f? one of the strongest shares reported, at a net pain of 2 1 i per cent. When it became apparent that the buying demand would not run the. day out traders changed their position, and were helped In their operations by a number of unfavorable railroad reports and by an Indicated loss in th« amount of cash held by the banks from the known movement of money in the week, which suggested an adverse showing in to-day's bank statement. Interest in the Harriman securities from the investment point of view doubtless will Y,c in creased as a result of the. publication of thfl earnings of the Union Pacific and Southern Pa ciflc for the month <.f March. The Union Pacific shows ;m incroasm In pcn>ps of (1,093,870 and an Increase In n<^t of $!50,<50fi, while Southern Pn ctflc's gross Increased $1.11".,7«6 and net de creased $568,808, the falling of In net by the lat- Ut company being due to an Increase In operat ing expenses of 51.654.ti94. Both roads expended from earnings large sums on their properties in the month, and it i« o,ultft probable that this policy win l.p continued for n long time to come, the payments on this account being possible without Interfering with dividends in the near future, though it is reasonable to suppose that a constant repetition of the March decrease In the Southern Pacific's net returns eventually ■will compel tM>! company to reverse its dividend policy. It is quite, evident that the declaration of thf iinnuMl rate of 5 per cent on the common stock of the Southern Pacific Company lust August was not based on a strictly conservative consideration of the best interest of the company, while the sani^ tliinK may be said of tho 10 per cent rate established by the directors of the Union Pacific, particularly as at the tlmo of the declarations it was known to the diroctorß that both cf.mpanieß would bo compelled to spend vast sums on the physical needs of the proper ties notwithstanding tho larK>' amounts already put out on this account. Union Pacific justi fies its 10 per cent dividends <>n »li f ' hasis that the company is now earning a large amount of money and is receiving a big Income from its in vestments in other roads, but apparently it fails to bear in mind that poor crops are a pos sibility, fhat trade, reaction accompanied by lower earnings by all the transportation com panies may develop and that industrial develop ment affectinp adversely the earnings of the Dnlon Pacific also will affect th<? earnings of the roads of the securities of which tha Union Pacific is a large holder. New York Central earnings for the quarter ended March 31 showed an increase in gross of only .$4'.M>.r.1.",, while net returns decreased $2, 258.594. operating rxpen>.es having increased f2.755.14K). After charges and dividends th*» company showed for the quarter a deficit of S'.'.-IMUJK.'v compared with a deficit in the same time a your ago of $4N..T7. r ». Of course, the March quarter cannot be taken as a forecast of the other three quarters of the year, but tho extremely poor showing in the last three months In comparison with the corresponding time in recent years Is disappointing, to say the least. And on top of these i»..>r earnings comes the. report that the company soon will be compelled to increase its obligations through the money market, which already holds .<i. > r>.<HH>,(HH> O f Its notes, to say nothing of the road's increased obligations of the last few years and its recent raising of its dividend to a 0 per cent basis. It should be remembered, however, that with its vast Improvements completed. New York Ceu traj, like the Pennsylvania, will be able to handle a larger volume, of business, anO for this reason it* friends express no uneasiness over the future y£ the property. Boston Copper continued Its upward movement, and after scoring a gain ssTjg receded slightly. Rurte Coalition. Nevada Consoli dated. Cumberland-Kly am! Greene-Cananea wer» decidedly firmer. Gold Hill and rnkvn were frac tionally better. Atchison rights were actively dealt in at a small recession, whii* the new 3a were dealt In for the first time at ICC4. Manhattan Transit was stronger. Western Ice was up '--. Bonds wera dull and unchanged. The market closed steady an* fairly active. TOPICS OF THE STREET. FOREIGN TRADING.- Foreign houses dealt m tho extent of ten thousand shares in the local market, mostly purchases. Th« baying was chiefly 111 Pennsylvania and Baltimore & Ohio. Foreisa operations were wholly on arbitrage account, In London consols were firm and the general mar ket quiet without Important feature. Money was Inactive, but there, was a largo application for th» new Indian loan. Th« new Irish land loan is expected at the end of lbs month. MARKET GOSSIP.-A commission house busj n^s>s in the current market Is extremely tight, or ders being confined to the operations of a few cus tomers Who follow the market from day to day and who at present are making a fair llvin; b7 buying on the declines and selling nn m first appearance of strength. This sort of public fol lowing does not makf> .1 bull market. The fact. however, that the. tendency of speculation recently has been to broaden on advances and grow dn3 on declines encourages many houses ti> hope for a generally better market in tlitr near future. It Is I pointed out. however, by some observers that th_ f-trikingly poor net railroad earnings for Marcht .and the uncertainty over the crops are fartor3 that work against any extended bull sp^ctlariop. at this time. The buying of Baltimore & Ohio and Nor folk & Western attracted some attention yesterday. particularly as foreign houses had the tip to buy these issues, and it was thought that accumula tion was going on for the account of Important interests. The Id pool in Brooklyn Rapid Transit showed some signli of lit>. though the advance was das in great part t»» traders' operations baaed oa the theory that th<» pool would become active as a result of what the Street considers the improved prospects for the defeat of the utilities bill. Re cent Increases In dividends do not fit In well with decreases being reported In net earnings, and the bear element on the Stock Exchange quite likely will make capital out of the poor showing by the New York Central, the Southern Pacific, the South ern Railway and the Pennsylvania, and. with fur ther bad crop reports to help, they may be abl* to make some headway against prices, though th* market shows marked resistance to adverse news. It was said yesterday that the copper stocks soon would be put materially higher. The metal Is b«» glnnl:ig to look decidedly firmer, producers hold ing out for ¥> 1 -: seats to 25 cents for hk» copper and Cs^i cents for electrolytic. Floor traders at the close yesterday said the market wt.s ' full of stacks and that prices wer-. being manipulated to facilitate distribution.
