Though operatlons in the stock market _-_re llght ln volume, with aetlve deallngs conflned to a few- iE6ues, the movement of values ln moat ehares throughout the day was in the dlrection nf a higher level, noteworthy ln.pri.vem. nt be? ing reoorded in a number of Beeurtties, includlnsr the Hill and Harnman issues, Amalgamated Copper and St. Paul. Union Paclrtc interests again were aetlve ln efforts to brlng about a higher priee for the Btock ln order to faellltate the disiribution of the convertlble bonds. elther by seiling them to the public, the latter having ihe privllegtj of converaion, or else by carrying the priee to the converaion level which would enable the syndlcate to convert its holdlngs and Eell "the stock ln the open market. L'nusual a. livlty developed in Northern Paciflc, the price of which sold on a parity wlth Great Northern preferred, but the movement was not accom panied by developments affecting the property or the etock, though the character of the opera? tlons suggested the probabllity of a distribution to Northern Paciflc stockholders of an extra dividend upon tha completlon of the so-called Burlington deal, by whicb the ..reai Northern purposts to take over Northern Paclflc inter? est in the Burlington company. ' The placing of Amalgamated Copper itock on a straight ??_ per cent dividend basis, and reported large aali copper at the new prices reeently established, were factors that tended to stiinulate bull en thusiasm among floor room traders. while they also aitracted some commission hou6e buyin_, the latter. however, being small ln volumi . Brooklyn Itapid Transit and Baltlmore Ai Ohlo were weak on small operations. Trading ln bonds was paint'ully light. An advance in the Paris check on London and the easler position of the local forelgn exchango market euggest the improbability of further gold exports to the French capltal. Absenee o_ en gagemonts of the preelous metal for shipment to Europe will help the city banka to Increase th.-ir cash holdlngs before the tlme comea f'.r the out? ward movement of currency to tbe Interlor, ar.d lt is belleved reeerves <>f the Clearing H-juse banks in the course of tho next few weeka will Increase to a materlal ext.-nt, unless there should be an outbreak of furious bull apeculatlon on the Stock Exchange. Tho poaltlon "f money in this country and in Europe has improved in recent weeks, but the aupply "f funds la not larg.. enough to finance aetlve operatlons on the long slde of the eei uritles ni^rket. and attempts at this Juncture to brlng about sustained hlgh-r prices doubtless wlll meet with failure, deapite the generally favorable slttiatlon in the cuuntry's industries. Though bank reaervea are alowly in creaslng they ar_ unusually low for this perlod of the year, not only ln the Unlted States but ln Europr- as v.-. II, th.e return ..f the Bank of Eng land received yesterday showlng a percentage of rf-sene to llability weaker than at any corre s]?onding time 5!n. <? 1900, while tha Bank of France and the Imperial Bank <>t Qermany also make poor rompariaons wlth this time ln pre cedlng yi>ars. The Bank of England's mlnimum rate of dlscount is 4 per c^nt, agalnst 3v_ per cent a year ago, 2 h% per cent ln 1&05 and :; per cent ln the four preceding years, whlle the per? centage of reserve ls 46, compared wlth 49.17 last year, 48.48 In 1 _? f? 5. 50.71 in 1904. 61.86 ln 1903. 50.90 ln 1902 and 46.42 in 1901. In tho v.-o,-.k ended yesterday the reserve lncreased a little over 2 per cent from a week ago. New York bank reserves are being helped by exeess govern? ment exp. ndltures and receipts of money from out of town, but ln a few weeka the demand In connection wlth the finamlng of the cropa wlll develop and with it there wlll come higher ratea for loans. Forelgn commerce in tho month of June Bhowed an exeess of merehandise exports over lmports to the value of $2,">.249,004. but this fa? vorable balance _as offset by forelgn seiling of American securities, by the undervaluatlon of lmports, by American traveller' credlts nn-1 by foroign loans for our account. Both lmports and exports were heavler than in any corre? spondlng month in the hlstory of the country. and the totals made the flacal year a record br- aker, the entlre exporta and lmports for the twelve months amountlng in value to $8,315. 252,116, an Increase over the preceding year >.f $334,825,170. In the lnst six years the growth ln exports has arhounied in value to $449,131. -_.'.., whlle ln the same time there ha? been an expansion ln lmports to the extent of $531.O80, 144. These flgures are good bull arguments on American lnveatment issues, and they ought to encourage every owner of eolld stocks and bonds in the bellef that their lnvestments are backed by a country of tremendous earning and buying power. The great galn ln lmports furnlshes Im? pressive testimony of the prosperlty of the peo? ple and explalns why the Unlted States gov? ernment under its tarlff laws has such a large balance ln lts tressury. But the treasury's ex? eess funds due directly to the buying power of tho publlc ought to be returned to the channela of trade through up-to-date currency reform. The Aldrlch blll makes lt posslble for the Secre tary of the Treasury to help the money market ln times of stress, but the measure ls llttle more than a makeshlft, and falls far short of remedy ing the evils of our present inadequate cur rfeney system. The country is great and proa perous, ln splte of lts antlquated currency laws, but it would be '.nflnltely b- tter off lf lts mon? etary system wero changed ln proportlon to the changes that have taken place ln general busi? ness and financial condltlona ln the Unlted Ftntes ln the last decade.
