What with on« large trust company refusing to open its doors, th« depositors of another prominent banking Institution clamoring for cash, tho suspension of a big Industrial cor poration, the closing of Hip. Pittsburg Stock Ex change and call money loaning at 125 per cent and little to be had even at that figure, tho stock markefhad a situation to face yesterday which was almost unparalleled In this country's history. That it refused to become absolutely panicky and stood up with surprising strength under such serious conditions ought to go a long way toward restoring confidence. There were heavy and sensational declines In certain Issues, to be sure, and many new low prices for th« present year and movement were recorded, but there were firm spots, notably Amalgamated Copper, American Smelting, the United States Steel Issues, Pennsylvania and New York Central, and there was not that reckless outpouring of securities at panic prices which marked the trading on Tuesday. Toward the close a moderate rally developed, and. though the market was decidedly nervous throughout and specialties Buffered extreme de clines, tho market leaders did not sustain as a rule louses of largo proportions. Union Pacific was the weakest of the spec ulative favorites, and sold down to a new low mark of i '~Vt right at th« opening, but it was worthy of note that It did not sell a^ain as low as at ii! ( : opening-, and closed at lOS'^, suffer ing a net loss of 3?4 point*. Atchison and Bal timore & Ohio were also weak, losing 4 and 3> 8 points, respectively, and closing near tbe bot tom. St. Paul and the Hill ptocks, on the other hand, showed much more resistance than of late, despite the fact that both Northern Pa cific and Great Northern were at new low marks at, the opening. American Sugar was active and weak, selling at par for the first time in years, and refusing to rally substan tially. Canadian Pacific also made a new low point at 153, as did Southern Pacific at fi:,t. L ,. Both, over, showed good rallying powers and tho n«t losses were small. Pennsylvania and the New York Central stood out like bul warks during the entire session, the former gaining 1% points on the day and the latter %. Anaconda, too, was strong, in sympathy with the other mining shards, and was up ■ % on the day. Th • common and preferred Steels were firm, the common gaining '« over Tuesday's closing price, after making a new low record at 21%, and the preferred losing only %. The other favorite Morgan Issue, Krie common, did not do so well, however, showing more weakness than for some time. It established a new low record for tho year at li\k, hut closed at 18. The first pre ferred lost 3 points. Delaware & Hudson was weak, reflecting, it was understood, sales on ac count of the failure Of Mayer & Co. on Tuesday. It sold down to 128, a new low mark for th.> movement and 99 % points below Its high figure for the present year, 227 1 -;. At Kb low point it showed a gross decline for the day of 11 points, but it rallied smartly and was only 6'<, points down for the day. The heavy declines In Westinghouse, General Electric and New York Air Brake stocks had, of course, a natural basis in the announcement from Pittsburg that the Westlnghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company would go into th« hands of a receiver, with most of Its allied and subsidiary concerns. The tightness of money was given as the reason. The fact that the Pittsburg Slock Exchange was ordered closed made New York practically the only market open for the Weetingooua* securities. The stock opened at 62, off 17" points from Tuesday's close, and on heavy liquidation declined steadily and with out rally to 34»,i. closing at 35, with a net d.- cllne for the day of 44 TA points. General Elec tric broke 17 points and then recovered 7. los ing 10 points for the day. New York Air Brake opened at 70, off 15 points, and closed at 1:,, down 10 points for the day. At the close of the stock market $200,000 was loaned at 125 per cent and at least $5,000,000 more was wanted. It was thought that many of the brokers would have to fall back on the mercy of the banks unless they succeeded In finding accommodation after the close of the market. The banks do not like to have to take care of customers under those conditions, but doubtless will do so where It Is necessary. m COBALT STOCKS. (Furnished by Wills & Co., No. 43 ICicbance Place.) IRON AND STEEL CONDITIONS Iron Age" says: "Prices for finished Iron and steel hare been kept at a moderate level, and. while they will probably be adjusted to a lessened consumption aa the oc casion arises, there Is no prospect of any such performance as we have witnessed In copper and In tin. ■ ■ •The pis Iron markets have been quiet. In th« East, where It has come down from the boom level, the price Is steady. In the South and In the Central West the deadlock between buyers and sellers continues. The hopes of an early move ment of contracting for next year are vanishing, and it Is uncertain what prices might develop If the market were thoroughly tested. A feature, however. Is the very low ebb of stocks In all quar ters. "The mills are catching up on plates and sheets, and In the case of the hitter some concessions are being mede. A decline in tlnplate is looked for ward to by the trade, since there has been a drop In pig tin from more than 45 cent* a pound to close to 30 cents a pound. The wire trade) stands forth as the one in which orders are still coming forward to the mills in almost undlmtntsbed vol um*." "The Iron Trade Review" »ays: "Prices on Southern pig Iron have declined sharp ly, the reduction being from .'3 cents to $1 a ton. The prices of light rails have been reduced from $2 to S3 a ton. The market to crude steel Is easior. and it is believed that current quotations could be shaded. Bar iron la weak In the Cleveland district, where one mill Is temporarily closed, and does not show much strength elsewhere. Business in tin plate and sheets is dull and a number of plants are Idle."
