STOCK MAKKET OPERATIONS.
Transactions in yesterday's Btock market wore
made up in preat part of th" operations of the
prof* BsionaJ element, commission houses having
few <ird---r.-s, except In bonds, In which Ilqutiiatirin
for various Interests .vho were compelled to
strengthen their cash resources was reported.
Heavy sales of Unit.-d State? Steel sinking fund
f>s on a declining scale of values were again re
cord) i, but offerings were well taken, and in
view "f the largf; number of bonds sold the de
cline in their pri. » was Insignificant. Through
out the list of leading shares the tendency was
in the direction of a lower level, declines, how
ever, as a rule being confined to fractions, with
the thief weakness in St Paul, Norfolk <fc West
ern. Great Northern, Pennsylvania, Reading,
T'rion Pacific and United States Steel, in Which
trading was quiet and uninteresting. The spec
ulative community was disturbed over the re
port from Washington that the Secretary of th"
Treasury had decided to call for a return of 10
per cent of the government money recently d.-
posited with the local banks, while sentiment
again was adversely affected by the urgent de
mand for money from all parts of the country
as reflected In further gold Import engagements
and an active premium on currency at ail the
principal cities. Exchange at Chicago on New
York advanced to ;>0 cents premium and the
rate at Boston was $1 premium. Commission
bouses were unable to obtain any time money,
call money ruled at 10 per cent and foreign ex
change was strong. Foreign houses were mod
erate sellers in the. local market, and at London
prices for most securities were heavy and sen
timent unsettled over the money situation In the
United States and the possibility of trouble at
the European capitals as a result of the Amer
ican demand for gold. A call by the govern
ment for a. part of the federal deposits recently
made as un emergency measure reflects confi
dence on the p.trt of the Secretary of the. Treas
ury that conditions at this centre have Improved
materially and that the Treasury's working
balance needs replenishment.
•TJold to the amount of tS.-^O.OOO reached this
port yesterday, and In the course of the next
week $20,000,000 more of the metal will arrive,
the result of which ought to be reflected In a
disappearance of the premium on currency and
marked Improvement in local bank holdings.
The bank statement that will be Issued Satur
day will be affected by many cross movements
of money, but the general showing undoubtedly
will be favorable, as it will be computed on ris
ing averages, while much of the gold received
la.st week and In the current week will be shown.
Against gold arrivals there has been an active,
movement of money to the interior, but the. How
to the West and South bo far has not been
heavy enough to offset the receipts of Imported
metal, and it Is not believed loan expansion will
present figures large enough to counteract the
increase In cash as an Influence upon reserves.
Some additional engagements of gold were an
nounced yesterday. The movement, however, is
on the wane, and at no greatly remote period
there will be a supply of money at this centre
that will make possible a return flow to Europe,
assuming that conditions at this point continue
to improve as they have been doing in the last
few days. In the mean time reckless specula
tion will not be permitted by tho banking
powers of Wall Street, and It is to be hoped tho
Western plungers and others who believe that
.i« prices are at bargain figures they are en
titled to engineer an aggressive bull move In
securities will analyze tho situation differently
and wili take the hint that notwithstanding bar
gain prices big speculative operations at this
Juncture would. If allowed, nerve to defeat the
plans of the conservative element for the re
establishment of normal conditions in the finan
cial community. The country at large Is not in
a position to speculate in stocks. Credit facili
ties are restricted at the moment and will con
tinue so for some time to come, and as a con
sequence no Important movements are looked
for on either side of the securities market pend
ing the readjustment of financial and business
affairs throughout the land.
Chicago and New Orleans engaged substantial
amounts of gold abroad yesterday, and on local
house took $1,000,000. The situation at out-of
town points is causing more concern to bank, ru
than the position of affairs In Wall Street, but
It is bettered that with the help that the finan
cial community here lfl extending and the as
sistance obtain*'*] from government deposits and
in now circulation interior cities will bo abln
to pass tliroi'^h the period of Btrem without
actual disaster. There was a slight easing in
the premium on currency at this centre, gold
commanding the same rates as paper money.
and It was thought that after to-morrow, when
many corporations have to make up their pay
rolls, there would be a distinct change for th"
better in monetary conditions. The premium
ruled from 3'a to 3%, with the heaviest demand
for currency from the country banks in tho
Middle West and In the South.
