The continuous improvement in monetary con ditions, as shown in the excellent bank state ment of Saturday, in the larg-e flow of money which is in progress from, the interior to this city, and in the easier rate for both call and time money, was the influence which caused the stock market yesterday, after a little hesi tation at the outset, to become strong and active and to advance during practically the entire session, with a small recession occurring in th» last few minutes. With currency returning in heavy volume from the country banks, the local institutions, as a rule, now find themselves once more In a position to meet all demands in cash and feel themselves justified In granting accommodation on time loans. For many weeks time money was unobtainable by would-be bor rowers, and although there has recently been a small supply available it has been held at rates >n high as to be virtually prohibitive. Yester day, however, the offering of time funds was fairly abundant, at decidedly lower rates than : those heretofore prevailing, 6 to 7% per cent j being asked for sixty-day loans, 6 to 7 per cent for ninety days and four months, and 6 per cent being bid for maturities from six months to a year. The ruling rate for call loans was 1 6 per cent, and at one time as low as 4 was quoted. The highest figure was 9 per cent, which was touched toward the close of the day. The heaviest transactions of the day were in Reading, a "half-stock," which, on sales in ex cess of 140,000 shares, crossed par for the first ! time in many months, closing with a net gain i of one point at 99. Northern Pacific was heav i lly traded in, rising to 125% and closing at i 124 a net advance of 2U points, its rise being ' due in part to the bidding of 2M per cent on the j curb for the next quarterly dividend, although no confirmation of the persistent rumors of I coming increase in the dividend or declaration of an extra dividend has yet been had. Con solidated Gas was also exceptionally strong, going to 104. OV4. points above its dosing; figure on Saturday, and ending the day 3% points up, at 102 u. A feature of the trading was the strength of the preferred issues of industrials. Central Leather preferred, for instance, gaining 1% points, American Tobacco preferred and ! American Can preferred each 2?i. Corn products preferred l- >T s. United States Rubber first pre ferred 5, and second preferred 3%, and Inter national Paper preferred 3% points. Among the gains in especially inactive issues were 11*4 points in American Snuff preferred, 15 in Morris & Essex, and *2% points in Delaware, Lack awanna & Western. The decision of the Supreme Court of the United States, declaring the employers' liability law unconstitutional, had a favorable* influence on the stock market. The appointment of a receiver for the Third Avenue Railroad Com pany was without market effect. MONEY A2JD EXCHANGE. MONEY MARKET — Money on call opened at 6 per cent: highest, I per cent; lowest, 4 per cent; closing. I®< per cent; last loan. 5 per cent: ruling rate, ( per cent. Time money opened the week considerably easier, there being a noticeable in crease in offerings, especially of small lots. Rales showed marked concessions, some sixty and ninety day loans being made at 6% per cent, four months' loans at S. Mercantile paper showed indications of an Increased disposition on the part of buyers, al though the volume of business was still limited. Hates were quoted at T'^B jjer cent for all kinds. FOREIGN EXCHANGE.— foreign exchange market opened firm at about Saturday's closing rates, with sterling cables quoted at 4.5655@4.5665, demand sterling at L55%#4.8585 and sixty-day bills at 4 .-I*. Short francs were around 5.17V4, less 1-16, and short reichsmrirks 94? i. Busfneas was quiet during the first half hour. The market developed an easier tone after the opening in the afternoon and had declined about 10 points for de mand sterling from the high rates of the morning. There was only a moderate Inquiry for remittance and bankers reported a somewhat better supply of bills. Cables were . toted at 4.56^4@4.5640, demand sterling at 4.fiH6of!i4.SJ7o and sixty -day bills at 4.81 !?i4.H!i*. IRON TRADE PROSPECTS IMPROVING.- Rcs-;/v ers. Brown & Co. say: •The new year finds the iron trade well on Its - way to recovery from one of the most suddez eof- ■;; lapses on record. From a combination of top-f^j notch production and abnormally high prices ~j r have dropped perpendicularly to a production eui ' ; I nearly in two and prices well below the avera;* ''-'• j cost of manufacture. The blow to confidence w- : 1 ;. j shook the whole country In October inevitably af- 7 fected pig iron consumption, production and prices -; j along with every otn»r commodity. But th* iron j j trade, as a whole, takes a good deal of satisfaction ' in feeling that in all the recent disclosures of • questionable business methods the Iron trad* has had to make few. if any. apologias for the way its affairs have been conducted. This confidence in fundamental iron conditions and the belief that the Inevitable needs of the country for Iron and steel will soon restore .1 normal demand has quick, ly brought about a recovery from the alarmist point of view, that obscured all others ■ ■ 1 weeks ago. Never in previous panics has the»« " been such a widespread determination on the part.. ! of manufacturers to avoid overproduction and ac- • cumulations of unsold stocks. Prospects now ar* 1 for orderly recovery. Neither producers nor con- . sumers want an unsettled and demoralized mar ket, so that the very .apparent steadying in prices ■■■ will be welcome to both. The market, as we enter , the new year, seems to be well established around , the basis of 113 :•) Birmingham, for No. 2 foundry, • Iron, with lake furnaces unwilling to sell for less than JIS and Eastern Pennsylvania furnaces -now ing a disposition to advance their quotations t» _ * about the same figures. Quite a volume of genuine , Inquiry has started up In the last week or two. | which will doubtless result In considerable busi- jj ness before the month is out." OUT-OF-TOWN BAITS SETT/ENS.
