In npft« of unfavorable developments in the way of deferred or passed dividends of Indus trial and copper mining companies, th* stock market yesterday, after irregularity and semi ■weakness in the early trading", became strong and active, advancing thenceforward until the close, when net pains were shown for most of the isspues. Total transactions were again not far short of 1.000.000 share?, and represented a wider ran^r of interest, 158 different issues figuring in the day's list of sales. New York Central was the leader of the market, making a maximum advance of 4 points, which carried it to 103, and ■ net grain for the dar of 3'i points. It-- advance was the result of the conspicuous success of the $3ft,000.0003 ft ,000.000 equipment trust note offprint?. Tvhich induced more or less buying 1 of New York Central for th«> long account and caused also an extensive- covering movement. The United States Steel issue?, in which also there is ■ large short interest, particularly in the common, were among th« day's strong feat ures, the common finally crossing 30. Quotations Jor copper metal were adanced % cent a pound on the New York lletal Exchange, a fact which may have contributed to the improvement of Amalgamated Copper and American Smelting and Refining', which made net gains respectively of 1 and II 1 * points. Honey continues to pour into the banks of this city in such volume as to give assurance that the surplus reserve, now re-established, will for the present increase week by week. The rate for call money yesterday did not go above 4-2 per cent, which was the ruling figure; but <ij per cent is a relatively low rate. Time money was offered in larger quantity on easier terms, C per cent being asked for a ninety-day loan on all industrial collateral, and the inquiry for mercantile paper showed signs of further broadening. Railroad earnings are still very unpromising, ana general business is still tend ing to ease off in activity, but confidence in the soundness of the banks has been restored, as is shown by the current releasing of enormous hoarded stores of money, and the restoration of that confidence without which men will not risk th. capital m even highly promising ventures will follow, although perhaps not in the near future.
