v TO HIT 'MORSE AGAIN. SPECIAL JURY MAY ACT. More Indictments Expected —So Conflict iaih Federal Officers. Tise special county grand jury may return pome tnor» Indictments in a few days against Charles W. Mcnx--. based en his manipulations of the various steamboat lines which l.<- acquired In recent years. Tn!s surmise was based yesterday on the examina tion by the grand jury of two officials of the Citi ienf' Steamboat Company. These witnesses were Charles li. Englis. of the Citizens; Steamboat Com pany, a.nd N. H. Campbell. treasurpr*6f both th» Citizens* and the Consolidated Steamship Interests. This line of Inquiry will be taken up again on Mon flay when more officials of the steamship lin<T, will I* examined being dropped temporarily for the in vestigation i"to Mr. Morse's connection with the let Truss. .Ay' 'District Attorney Jerome and United States At torney Stimson had a conference yesterday mornlr.s in" the Federal Building. li Is supposed that they •ret together i»o there would be no conflict of au thority when Mr. Morse arrives next Sunday. "It was a -visit of comity." said Mr. Bthvaan when It was ovrr. ' Before ac «a» Mr. Jerome Mr Stsm«=on denied that the federal grand jury liad any indictments against Mr. Morse. While it is true that none has been returned to him. it is certain, according to trustworthy Fources. that 'he. indictments have been prepared and that they probably will be ■••■- sented to-morrow .-: the latest. Of late it has been the custom for an indicted man to appear In court with his counsel instead of being placed under arrest and haled to court by an officer in federal cases, and if any indictments are found Baaaaaat Mr. Hone this- procedure undoubtedly •will be followed. Mr. Btlißana said al«=o that whatever happened he would not have Mr. Morse Tret by Marshal Henkel, and also denied being authority for the story that Mr. Morse had tnna faired a large sum of money to Berlin. There was a report yesterday that Mr Morse h£fi transferred a considerable part of his fortune —the sum named was 54.000,000 or thereabouts— to Mrs. Morse, and that she had diamonds enough alone to keep her husband from want. The money that he gave Mrs. Morse, it is said, is so sur rounded by legal safeguards that not only can his creditors not reach it, .but he cannot touch the money himself. Or of the severest blows yet dealt to Mr. Morse is supposed to have been the testimony given yes terday by E. R. Thomas, who was before the grand Jury for about ten . minutes and al«o was with District Attorney Jerome tor an hour or so. Mr. Thomas is supposed to have wiped off the account between him and Mr. Morse, which became due ■when the latter testified more freely than Mr. Thomas liln-d. U is said, about the Provident Sav ings Life, by telling all about certain checks de posited with the Bank of North America, the first ciew to which was given by the testimony of Alfred H. Curtis before the grand jury. He is said to have told of a letter written by Mr. Thomas giv ing th* full details of these transactions, which Mr. Morse denied before the grand Jury, it Is said. The conference between Mr. Jerome and Mr. EUmson is believed to make it unlikely that there -will be any indictments returned against Mr. Mo:?e before to-morrow or Monday. But that these are being prepared is apparent, for Oliver E. Pagan, apnlai United States attorney, was closeted yes terday with Captain Ball, who has handled for a long time all the indictments har.J«-J down by fed eral grand juri-s in this city. Mr. Pagan made <r HI visits to the office of Mr. Bthnaan, and it Is ■ I that be and Captain Ball, who is an as sistant United States attorney, spent most of the day la Ok drawing of the Morse indictments which have been voted for by the federal grand jury. There will be no session of the federal grand jury to-morrow end^o ■eaalan of the Crimina B-anch of the United States Circuit Court until Monday, wh:ch means that probably the indici r.'.: ■, wi'.i not be returned before Monday. When the findings of the amnd jury are returned, it was said >istfrdsv I--. <»- in a position to know. th-y will contain several surprises to the pubhc Of the aliped secretion of ■ ***** in Berlin a mar, cm-,.-- I with ihe federal courts said yes t*ni=": Tola «verniaent could have no p.^.b, interest in the . q . u ,., between Mr Morse and his business associates The United State, could be isttrorted only in violations cf the «:sting bank ins **? or crime .o.nmKU-J , bank officials while itotaMerfnS the affair* at - national bank. Unwilling to Settle Per Diem Dispute anu Suggests Taking It to Court. New Haven. Feb. 13— It Is reported here, that the New York. New Haven & Hartford rtallroa'l Company has received another appeal from th-? American Railway Association for the settlement ot th> 60 V cents a day dispute, but lias not accepted, and has expressed the opinion that the matter of the , settlement of * the accumulated demurrage charges should go to the courts^ The New Haven company, since It. withdrew . from the association on October 1. 1907; has debited Itself regularly With the 50 cents per diem charge, and lha accumulation now amounts to about 1800.000. I. is najallrd aa probable in railroad circles here that the company, should any agreement be reached soon, will settle- with the connecting lines for not more than half that sum. In railroad circles here it Is regarded as extreme ly doubtful whether the vote on reducing the per diem charge from 60 to 25 cents, which must be re turned !by February 25, will show a requisite ma jority in favor of the measure. - -■ A report here, which cannot be confirmed official ly, Is that unless the general matter is settled by March 1. the New York Central will Join the largo Now England railroad companies and give notice of withdrawal. > SERIES OF MISHAPS AT FIRE. He was struggling among the cakes of ice when Robert S. Eason, of Engine Company 135, plunged in. Collins held Easons arms and the two were sinking when the men on the fireboat Abram B. Fire Commissioner Bonner said yesterday that the 100.000. feet of hose already ordered was only a starter of what was needed. "We will use this to replace the hose in the crowded districts." he said. "And. we hope to buy* more at an early date. Contracts for hose will be given to the lowest bidder who complies with speci fications prepared by a committee appointed for the purpose." The committee, it is understood, consists of Com missioner Bonner. Deputy Commissioner Wise ani Chic* Croker. The firm that gets the contract will be required to give a guarantee that bursted hos^ will be replaced for a period of four years. Commissioner Bonner said that rough handling, together with the fact that hose was always folded In the wagons, tended to wi ar out the rubber, and that the old hose had undoubtedly been greatly damaged by horses' hoofs and heavy t nicks driven over it. "I consider th«> force fully adequate to handl" any situation that might d.-v'olop now. but It is my policy to increase it in proportion to the growth of the city," Mr. Bonner said. "I believe that the volunteers of the force should be done away with and regular firemen substituted. This will take time, however, and the projects planned may call for a bond BBane.** He was not ready to take up the ncommenda tion of ex-Commissioner Lantry and Chief Croker for an appropriation of $1,300,000 to replno« the present fire alarm system. NEGROES FIND JEWELS IN LAUNDRY. Brenick saw a negro trying to pawn a diamond Ftiekpin in an Eighth avenue pawnshop yesterday afternoon and placed Mm under arrest. At Police Headquarters the negro said he was Wallace Bell, of No. 232 West 17th street. H*> confessed, said Brenick. to having obtained the pin from Mrs. Mln nla Wallace, who lived in Tompklns avenue. Brook lyn. The dete'-tive went to the address and asked for Mrs. Quick's jewelry. All the missing property, excepting a $30 bill, also ro'led up in ihe garment, was recovered. The woman was locked up. TO ESTABLISH FACTORY IN ENGLAND. Boso n, Feb. 13.— As the result of legislation en noted by the British government, the United Shoe Machinery Company of this city will be obliged to establish a factory in England. Several heads of departments in the Beverly factory of the corpora tion have gone to England to superintend the work of equipping the new plant. The British Parlia ment recently passed a bill prohibiting the im portation of completed machinery made by foreign corporations which have patents registered In Eng land unless the manufacturers forfeit their patent rights. Not desiring to lose its English patents, the United Shoe Machinery Company decided to build an English factory. The change will reduce some what the output at the big Beverly factory, where twenty-three hundred men are employed, but the loss will not be a serious one to that city, as the company has transferred the easiness of the Good year factory In Boston to the big plant. KNICKERBOCKER DEPOSITORS TARDY. The question of making: permanent the receiver ships of the Kniciwrbockcr Trust Company comes up again for a hearing before Justice Clark of the Supreme Court in Stat»-n Island to-morrow, and depositors who have not already assented to the plan of resumption have only cne more day In which to do so. Herbert L. Satterlee. counsel for the depositors' committee, said yesterday that the situation lias not been substantially changed In th- past fort night, and that it was apparent that most of the ruli-assenting depositors were still waiting in the false hope that they would set their money in full without participating in the plan. He added that when the matter comes up on Saturday before Justice Clark the committee will have a discour aging report to make of its two weeks' work un less a majority of the non-assenting depositors come into the plan to-day.
