Stock market values moved in an irregular manner throughout the five hours of trading with small net gains in the greater numb of active issues at the close. There were periods of pronounced weakness. in the course **"£<* declines of from 2 to 6 points were recorded but at the low levels enough support developed to induce covering by the shorts, who still dis played extreme caution in their dealings, despite Si generally accepted theory that th, inside interests In the bull campaign no longer were in a position to shape the movement of prices .ln the direction of a sustained advance. There were some indications that certain large specu lators had sold their stocks at recent high quo tations, and that speculation had ceased to he an affair of a few resourceful capitalists was reflected in the quick changes recorded on botn sides of the account; also in the unwillingness of the trading element to follow advances after the settlement of their short contracts. Traders would n't make extensive commitments on the short side. but. on the other hand, they showed no leaning toward the bull side of speculation. In its general characteristics the day's market indicated to many observers a speculative situ ation not uncommon after the culmination of a violent advance and the resultant reaction, and I it was not considered unlikely that price move ments in the immediate future would tend toward narrow fluctuations with gradual con traction in the volume of business, barring. Of 1 course the development of news that might j have a most important bearing on the actual i worth of securities. In the active list the only Issues that failed to enjoy substantial Improvement after periods I>f seven depression were Brooklyn Rapid Tran sit and Missouri Pa.-iflc, the last named suffering a maximum loss of 6* and a net loss of B points on selling for both accounts. Accompanying the decline in this stock were rumors intimating -hn possibility Of unfavorable financial develop ments in the affairs of the Gould properties. though there was no official confirmation of these reports. Wall Street, however, did not bother itself with the real position of the Oould companies, n^r did it pay much attention to the actual course <<f outside news, which lncludjed factors both favorable and unfavorable as affect- Ing the country's business situation. The stock market's recent ad\anc*» discounted everything favorable in Industrial conditions, otherwise more consideration might now be given to the splendid outlook for the crops and the rapid change for the better that is taking place in the iron trad<- Bond bouses reported a good demand for mortgage issues Offerings of well secured bonds fiixl immediate buyers, and, of cours*. this is one of the most reassuring signs of the return of confidence among investors, who a few months ago preferred to hold their funds in the bank.- rather than have them* in anything Wai! Street had to sell. Further heavy engagements of gold for export were made yesterday, bringing the total on the current movement to more than 127,000,000. In dications in the foreign eyhanee market sug geflted the probability of additional shipments in the course of the next fortnight, but bankers •were not alarmed over the prospects, as they recognized that the flow of th< metal to Europe was in response to international monetary con ditions at a time when this country could well spare the gold, though, of course, they were not particularly p]<>as<»d with th<=- heavy return of American securities from Europe which for pome time has been a far-tor in keeping ex change against New York. Foreigners who bought American stocks when the- were selling at lower quotations than those now reported have been taking advantatrr of the recent ap pre< iation in -.allies here to realize profits, while ther^ also has been some liquidation <«f a forced character as a result of financial disturbance m Germany Money is much higher in Berlin than It is in New York, and much of the gold that Is leaving these shores doubtless eventually will go to the <Jprman capital, but so far the movement has been in great part for tlif- direct account of Paris, where active efforts are being made to Increase the gold supply of the Bank of France, which already reports enormous hold ings- Paris experts to be called upon in the fail to finance large Russian loans, and evidently Paris bankers are preparing to help both Berlin and St Petersburg;. Money matters here are moving along lines that foreshadow higher rates for funds, but some of the Washington lawmak ers do not show Intimate acquaintance with tlio Fituati'»Ti when they announce that unless they pass their so-called financial emergency meas ure another panic will develop this Call. Bankers who at this time last year saw the :-i"nii com ing see nothing In current conditions that war rants the expectation Of a similar visitation. E STOCKS. [ & Co.. No. 7 Wai; str^t.) I IM. "The Iron A(te • aajrt The developments in the pis iron markets have been followed with the closest attention by the whole trade, because they illustrate what follows a sharp decline made to brine out buyers. The deadlock was broken by a !«>a.ltnK Southern inter est, which promptly booked a very larpe tonnage, and was followed by others with similar results' Their prices were then restored to the $11 ,V> basis for No. 2 foundry at Birminßham. other Southern makers advanced their price to S\2. with higher pries for distant deliveries. In some sections notably the tidewater markets and New England. other sellers followed the break later on. the result belns a decline during the last week, which brings them clo»er into line with those reached before in the Central West The result hi- been that a good deal of additional business baa been closed in the Central West, and that a comparatively laree tonnaee has been placed nt tidewater and In New England, foundry No. 2 veiling In that part of the country at $16 75. "The Iron Trade Review" says: Great activity continue* in the pit; iron market with an immense volume of inquiry, and m .my sales of moderate totmajre aKKregating a l.trse total. Follow the heavy buying of large inter ests, smaller consumers in large numbers have coin** Into th- market, and orders have been freely placed. There is, of courte. some difference of opinion as 10 whether this buying movement la Justified by Industrial conditions, and It is unques tionably true that there la (.onatderabJ* placing of orders In anticipation of increased business, with out-positive evidence that aucfei increase will be realized. In some quarter.-; pessimistic comments are being made, with the prediction that ilulne.-a will soon return. On the contrary, there Is sub stantial evidence from many quarters of Increased melt, ami there Is a better feeling throughout the country. Sentiment Is certainly doing Its share, and may have an Important Influence in averting i return to conditions wnlch characterized the period of depression. ~!.v" FERRY COMPANIES. Bid.
