Union Pacific and Fries Lead the Decline — Banks Gain Cash. Stock market speculation was lifted out of its rut of stagnation yesterday by an aKgrwslve at tack upon values throughout the list, the move ment being followed by heavy sales of specula tive accounts, many of which were on stop loss order? and by a general demoralization for a time of prices in all the leading issues, particu larly in Union Pacific and the Erie shares. A plentiful supply of new Union Pacific, bonds or. the curb that were quoted at a discount of on.« half of 1 per cent and the financial troubles of the Erie were the immediate cause of the change in the character of trading, the Street assuming that the weakness in the Union Pacific bonds reflected a disappointing response to the public offering, while it figured the troubles of the Erie into a reorganization of that property. A re organization would be a bull argument on the Erie securities. Erie Is having a most vexatious time with Its treasury department because of its heavy obligations and its poor earning*, but the fact that the big banking concern behind the road Is willing to advance Its own funds to tide the company over its present difficulties shows a remarkable degree of confidence in high banking quarters in the future of the property. The Erie shares suffered maximum losses of from '-' to 4 points: Union Pacific *%, with a net loss of 3*; Reading. 1%: Great Northern. "64- st Paul. 35». and Northern Pacific. 2%, these Issues among the active stocks being lead ers in the downward movement. Nine stock* supplied more than two-thirds of the total deal ings which were about three times as heavy as the total of the preceding day. The decline, of course -svan accompanied by reports affecting the financial position of individuals and firms, and in the afternoon the selling was intensified by the rumor of a receivership for a big corpo ration which is known to be heavily overcapital ized and urgently in need of ready money. Clos ing: prices were above the lowest, but the mar ! ket showed an absence of effective support, ox cept in United States Steel. According to the known movement of money \ in the week the local banks have gained morn ; than $10,000,000 on all operations in their cash , holdings, and it Is therefore probable the bank statement to-day will show a considerable in : crease In reserve above legal requirements. In ' terior banks continue to send money to New i York in large amounts. The Sub-Treasury is ' losing on its transactions with the city bank? and gold exports have ceased. There is a pleth ora of idle funds at this centre which prom ises to increase until a demand develops for ac commodation in connection with th* financing and marketing of the year's harvests, and as a consequence the outlook favors easy rates for loans throughout the summer, with no disturb j ance In the fall, though the Secretary of the Treasury and the banks are making prepara tions to take advantage of the new emergency currency measure in the event of the develop ment of conditions that would warrant the issu ance of additional banknote circulation as speci fied in th* Aldrich-Vreoland law. There does not appear at present the slightest chance of this measure being brought into practical ush in the autumn, but bankers intend nevertheless to be prepared for an unexpected emergency. The. Treasury will want money from the bank.-? before long, particularly as the government bonds of 1905 will mature in August, and it Is not unlikely the banks at this centre will be called on to give up the greater part of their government deposits. Even this loss will not ad vance rates for money, especially as in July the Treasury payments to the banks will be far heavier, from current indications, thßrt pay ments by th« banks to the Treasury on revenue account Government receipts from customs and internal revenue will be light throughout th summer, while government expenditures »s a result of the large appropriations made by Con gress will be unusually heavy Bankers rrould •welcome the development of some factor that would give them a better price on their money. The mercantile demand for funds is extremely light AMERICAN SECURITIES ABROAD. London. June 12, 4 p. in.— market for Amer ican securities was weak.
