One by one the old landmarks of loner Manhat tan are being torn down to make way for the modern skyscrapers. Another name was added to the list when the puests at th« Everett House. 37th street and Union Square, went down to break fart yesterday morning. A larpe notice on the offlee bulletin board Informed the m that the Cen tury Investment Company, which owns the hotel, had decided to tear down the building and erect a twenty story offlee building in Its place. 'i he seventy-five puests, many of whom have been patrons of th« hotel for years, looked at one another bewildertd and then went outside into the rain and immediately sought George Walker, the man ager of the hotel. "Yes." said Mr. Walker, "It is all true. The old Everett House Is one of the has beens. They are pomp to tear It down and erect a modern build- In* in its place. The hotel as It stands now is worse than useless, for this is not the part of the city for a hotel now. and, anyway, the Everett is obsolete. lisa restaurant attached to the hotel went Into the hands of a receiver a few days ago, and while the owners have be«n contemplating such a move for some time this hastened their action. You don't need to hurry out; take a* much time as you want to find suitable accommodations, but within a few weeks the Everett will be no more." When seen last night Mr. Walker told many in teresting facts concerning the hotel when it was one of The fashionable hostleries of the city, along with the eld Aster House and others. Prnice Henry of Battenberg: stayed at the Everett House and was wined and dined there, as did the Duchess of Marlborough. mother of the present Duke of Marlborouch. It was durir.g the Civil War that the Everftt House was at the height of its glory, and oldtimers say that the scenes there at balls and dinners were brilliant ones. All the hot*! servants were paid off yesterday. and most of the guests had left last night. Mr. Walker says the remainder will go to-day. The" Everett House is one of the oldest structures of its kind in the city. It was opened in 1554 and was named after Edward Everett, a portrait of whom has hung for many years in the reception room. It contained a great many pieces of old decorative furniture and enormous mirrors, three of which cost J7.500. The property was purchased for about JSoO.OTo in the early part of last year by a syndicate, of which the Century Realty Company, the Alliance Realty Company and Potter & Eros, were members, from Ferdinand Kurzman. Richard Deeves end Hen rietta Kahn. The lot on which the hotel prands contains 16.500 square feet. The building, which is five stories high, has a frontage of 140 feet In Fourth avenue and 12S feet in Union Square. ENGINEERS TO MEET IN DETROIT. Programme of American Society's Annual Meeting.
