& Of Interest n^ v»£ to Women. SO3IE D. A. R. HAPPY Others Disapprove of McLean $200 "00 Loan. The officers of the National Society of the Daii^hters of the American Revolution have lost no time In availing: themselves of the permission to bond the society for the completion of Memorial Continental Hall, -which was granted at a stormy session of the recent Continental Congress in Wash ington. The president general. Mrs. Donald McLean. baa negotiate a loan of $300,000 from the Washing ton banks and is now busy signing contracts. The work of finishing the building will be begun im mediately, and it is expected that it will be com pleted by the time Mrs. McLean retires from office, next April- At this date her second term expires. and she cannot be elected, successively, for a third. On this fact is said to turn all the difference of opinion— to put it mildly— about borrowing money to finish Continental Hall. The object, say th« enemy, is not to finish the hall, but to shed glory on the McLean administration. And the cause of the opposition, say the McLoan supporter-, is not fear of going in debt, bat unwillingness to let Mrs. McL?a.n have the credit of bringing the work to completion. The Now Tork City Chapter, of which Mrs. Mc- Lean was regent before she became president gen eral of the national society, is supporting her en thusiastically, and at its last meeting of the sea son, held a few days ago. adopted a resolution congratulates^ Mrs. McLean on the successful ter mination of her rfforts to secure the loan and referrir.sr to l> expected completion of the hall as a "brilliant achievement" and "one of the greatest of the permanent benefits that Fhe will have conferred on the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution during the administration of her high office." The loan was obtained at 4 per cent interest, which will amount to SS.OX) a year, and the prin cipal may be paid off in amounts of $5,000 or more At thirty days" notice. The society has 593,000 on hand, and has already spent $300,000 on the building and site. This will make the ■ building cost when finished more than half a million dollars. Mrs. M. George Ryttcn'rere. who is a member of the Continental Hall committee and also of the New York City Chapter, said yesterday that the national society was fully equal to the obligations it had assumed. ••Our income," she said, "is nearly $*0/W) a year, and is rapidly growing. Only since the Continental Congress we have taken in a thousand new mem bers, and that means an increase of $1,000 a year In our income, as *i of each member's annual dues goes to the national society. Last year we paid over $I .■"•" from the current fund to the Conti nental Hal! fund. Besides that, the chapters . throughout the country are constantly raising money Bar this purpose. New York City Chapter alone raised 55.000. So I don't see why there Ehould be any Question of our being able to meet our payments. "We shall save $3,000 a year in rent as soon as we can move our offices into the hall, and as large contracts are more advantageous than small ones it seems to me it would be very unbusinesslike to ft M trying to finish the building by piecemeal. Besides, we want to see it finished in our lifetime. This all seems so reasonable and businesslike to me that I can't conceive why any one should op pose the plan, and I don't think the opposition amounts to anything numerically. "The resolution approving the plan was unani nously adopted by the Continental Hall commit tee at a meeting where every state was represent ed and almost every chapter regent present. It was finally introduced into the congress by Mrs. Lockwood, a member of the old party which op posed the election of Mrs. McLean. That doesn't look as if the thing were a party affair. I think the opposition is mostly confined to New York and has its origin in local politics." Continental Hall was begun during the admin istration of Mrs. Charles Warren Fairbanks, four years ago. but the work had to be stopped for want of money. The walls are now up and the building is covered by a temporary roof, but most of the interior work has still to be done. TO EMPTY THE JAILS. Thomas Fp" Mosby. pardon attorney to the Governor of Missouri, has a plan for cmpTyln? UK jail?, -which now cost the country more. bm say?, than Use public schools. In the last bulletin of th* National Society for th«?
