Bear Traders Raid Market— Hock Island Issues Attacked. Persistent efforts on the part of the bear ele ment in yesterday's stock market were effective in attracting some genuine selling In various parts of th« list, especially in the last hour. when the weakness in the general market was more pronounced than on any preceding week. The buying power appeared to he much re stricted, and as a consequence the offering of moderate quantities caused sharp declines in values. In the early dealings aggressive bear attacks on the Rock Island securities, accom panied by liquidation In the bonds, naturally created uneasiness in the speculative com munity, particularly as the initial selling was followed by rumor* affecting adversely the Rock Island property; but as a rule the heaviest oper ations were for the account of the board room traders, who apparently were bearish more be cause of the absence of a real demand for se curities than because of any considerations In connection with the Rock Island or other prop erties. According to the interests identified with the Rock Island, there is no reason for the ■ale of the company's stocks and bonds. The company's finances are in the hands of able men and there Is nothing in the present posi tion of the road that warrants the talk of re organization. While the decline .In Rock Island was the main influence in the mornings Trans actions the general market broke away from Its influence in the afternoon, traders selling the genera! list without regard for the movement in the R/>ck island shares, which closed at a loss of 3 points for the preferred and 1 point fer the common. The- St. Urals and San Francisco is sues lost 4% for the first preferred and 2% for the second preferred. Union Pacific. Reading and Northern Pacific lost more than 2 points, while net declines of 1 point were common \ Rock Island interest no longer in possession of the confidence of the chief people in the Rock Inland company it is known was an important factor in depressing Bock Island securities sell in? blocks of Rock Island collateral bonds for the purpose of breaking the general list. Thi* Individual had tried the same tactics before and he Is no longer a favorite In respectable Wall Street quarters. He is one of the crowd of -Western plungers whose operations ought to land them in the county Jail. ■ - , M?«n> of the railroads are negiuu-s •■« •••»-*.:■ on placing large orders for new rails and rolling stock th» management of the companies believ ing business conditions are on the mend and that after the fall election there will be a gen eral resumption of Industrial activity In the las' thirty days there ha? been a material de- . crease in the* number of idle cars on the rails , of American roads, the improvement, while gen eral throughout the country, being especially pronounced on those roads that run through manufacturing communities. This is a pretty ood Indication of a more confident feeling among manufacturers, and from now on the monthly report of th*» American Railway Asso ciation'will be watched with particular Interest, a* the number of cars that may be returned to service will present a faithful reflection of the course of the country's industries. No one looks for a business boom at present, but the greater number of business men believe j easy money, big crop* and the elPCtJon of Secretary Taft will result in a remarkable expansion In all lines of trade and be followed by a general advance In [Z price of purities, especially In th«»« Issues which so far have failed to share to any large extent in the improvement that has taken place ince the Oral of the year, notably th* low priced stocks that have been paying small dividends and Socks that have not been In the dividend n"ving list as. for Instance. Ontario & West ern which is on a 2 per cent basis, and < olo rado ft Southern common, upon which there never have been payments. The Colorado ft Southern Company will at no remote time place It. common stock in the dividend column. The coal road have not been seriously affected by hard times so far. and it is likely business ex pansion will come before the effects of de pression reach the coal producing and carrying companies. The fact that Ontario & Western, which is one of the cheapest of the coal stocks. is being quietly absorbed by persons who evi dently know something about the future of the property naturally has attracted attention to the issue. ... „ Th. trust companies win nave '■' increnor. their iwivm before the end of the month, and a call from the Secretary of the Treasury for •rovernment funds in depository banks may come any day; but these factors will have no influence on money rates In view of the enor mous holdings of the Clearing House banks, i which show reserve* of more than 164.000. ot counting reserves against national deposits. The amount the hanks may lose on withdrawals of federal funds will be offset by receipts of currency from the interior, which show no sipns of falling off. and which doubtless will continue lare-ly in excess of shipments ur.til alter the demand in connection with the harvests de velops Since Friday the local banks have rained on their operations with the Bub-Treas ury upward of $800,000 and a much larger amount from out of town There was no change in money rates yesterday and no engagements of roM for export, but Indications pointed tow ard additional exports of the metal before the end of the week.
