CONDITION OF TRADE, t Iran's Review says: 1 While the temperature has been too high for best results in fall retail trad., the volume is steadily increasing and manufacturing plants have extended «p«'raUons still further. Fbere remains the draw *>aok of tern water that retards pome mill work land river transportation, while valuable Umber has Ttx-en destroyed by forest fires. Leading industries are receiving larper contracts:, especially Bteel and cotton mills, although the raw cotton market was •unsettled by labor troubles at sshlre mills that threaten to interrupt the export movement of the Southern staple Some seasonable increase Is noted- in the coal industry, although production end shipments art- still smaller than a year* ago. Most Jobbing houses report a tendency to prepare lor the future on a larger scale, and woollen mills Jiavc less idle machinery; but shoe shops find diffi culty in 111 Ing, the higher prices made necessary Tby the firm leather market. Railway f«rnines thus •far reported for September are 9.3 )«•: cent W? than last year, and foreign commerce at this port alone bar the last week shows a loss of JM0.696 in exports and a pain of laMUM in imports as com pared with the same week last year. The crop:: are being marketed freely and money is withdrawn •from local banks by interior correspondents, but re ■jervea are still abnormally heavy and rates low. Several orders of importance have b-v»n placed tl>!« ■week for finished steel and th*- osoal cup] if Final! contracts appeared, but the waiting attitude Js still conspicuous among the large buyers, espe <•!«;>• the railways. Prices are steady for Iron and «=te*l. but minor metals are in large supply and vnk. Some lmprovfm"TiT has occurred in the J>rimary market for drygoods. although the situa tion is not radically changed. liradrtreefs says: "While events generally tend toward steady, if SSaaJr. improvement, conservatism still rules* pur chasing in ■wholesale and Jobbing lines, and .-it Miutl large centres fall trade, notably in dry rood?!. has reached and passed it? m«xinii">i. Taken as a whole, trade, though In a few instances eoual to a year ago at this date, is still generally Tbelow the normal, and th» approach of xh* «.!eotlnri. evidenced by increased activity by prominent men. has a tendency to dlsoourn.ee all bat absolutely n^c frsr.ry purchases. " ~ FINANCIAL AFFAIRS STOCKS IRREGULAR. Hill and Rock Island Issue* Rise Sharply— Professional. Th- upward paco of Thursday in the Stock market was not maintained yesterday, the course of the trading being marked by much irregularity, although at the dose net grains considerably outnumbered net losses. First quotations "were in the majority of instances fractionally under the final prices of the pre ceding day, and strength did not begin to de velop until around the end of the first hour. from which time on the tendency was Irregu larly upward. Foreign |K>usea sold stocks In moderate volume at the high level of the morn inp. The- feature of the trading was the sharp advance in the late afternoon of the Hr» stocks and the securities of the Rock Island sj-stem. Northern Pacific, which wltJa^Great Northern has for a good while lagged behind the rest of the market, made a rapid advance of 44 1 * points to 138%. and bad lost only one point of Its gain at the close; while Great Northern gained] l»» points. The movement of these two stocks *aa attributed principally to covering by the shorts. who had become overconfident m consequence of the extensive liquidation In them and their apparent lack of support. The advance in the Rock Island Issues, which ran to 4\ points In Hock Island preferred on very heavy trad 2% points in St. J.«.'iis & San Francisco — nd preferred and 10 joint? in the CbJcago & East ern Illinois certificates, was accompanied by re ports that arrangements bad been made to finance the "Frisco's obligations maturing on October 1 and its note Issue of about $7,125,000. falling due on December 1. Although leading Rock Island interests said that no financing was imminent, the Impression persisted that ar rangements were at least under consideration looking to the taking of steps which would benefit the system. In the bond department the heaviest transactions were in the bonds of th- Chicago. Rock Island & Pacific and the Si Louis & Ban Francisco, which closed at about the best prices of the session, representing gains of from 1% to 4 points. Union Pacific and Southern Pacific, the sales of the former' of which were the largest of any Issue, closed at fractional net declines, and appeared to have been distributed under cover of the strength prevailing in th" general Hat. The day's trading was apparently in large measure professional, and was not Influenced by news developments, for the day was devoid of news bearing upon the market for securities Although the market has become sensitive to political developments, the most important over night occurrence, the publication of another in stalment of the letters contained In the por tentous leather basr of William K. Hearst, only added to the proof of the already known fact of the Standard Oil Company's active Interest In politics and politicians. The political situa tion should be the controlling factor of the stock market operations, for upon the outcome of the contest for the Presidency hinges the question of th<- speedy revival of confidence and of business activity. The mercantile agencies this week report an Improvement in business, but point out that it is slow and cautious, tb* bulk of the buying being still for Immediate, deliver:.-— in other words, hand-to-mouth buying —and many important orders being withheld until the result of the election shall be known. The election of Mr. Taft appears now to be virtually assured, but the uncertainties of poll tics are proverbial, and the enemy is active. Within twp or three weeks it will be possible to make forecasts which will be fairly trust worthy. but tbe stock market cannot yet with safety proceed to discount the probability of the triumph of the Republican policies at the •mils in November. The shipment of gold to Canada is responsible for the largest part of the $5,517,000 loss of cash by the banks this week. Indicated by the known movements of money: but despite that loss, a favorable bank statement Is probable to day, as the severe liquidation In the stock market must have reduced materially the loans and deposits, and therefore the amount of the required reserve against deposits.
