CONSOLIDATED EXCHANGE.
The heaviest tfßaaVaal on the Consolidated
Exchange was early In the day. but the
market continued fairly active up to. the
close. Total sales of 147.710 shares were
distributed among sixty-four Issues. Com
mission houses handled a groat many
buying orders, and the room trading ele
ment was tilaylnt; tor a rally, covering
outstanding shorts actively on all the early
soft spots. It seemed to be a prevalent
idea on the floor that Monday's decline
had been a "shake out" on a large scale.
Prices most of th-> day exhibited relative
fiimne«s, compared with quotations on the
Htm York Stock Exchange, although at
the done there was some renewal of short
Exiling in United States Steel common and
Heading on the part of professional trad
ers who were not satistied v Ith the ex
tent of the tecovery. The last sale of Steel
oemmon was at 86 I*.1 *. compared with a final
price on the other board of 804. That
ftuck led all others In volume. Several of
the prominent issues failed to touch ax
low figures as were reached on the other
exchange, among them Heading. Copper
