Wh^n the last day of ISWS passed there was a feeling of relief because tlie twelve months had been full of suspense, but there was a dis tinctly confident expectation that 1909 would record much more satisfactory business conditions than the two previous years. This expectation has been fully justified, and although a note of warning of the danger of overproduction lias been occasionally pounded, the country has shown its won derful ability to consume the immense pro duction of blast furnaces and mills. Keen interest has been felt in the trade as to how the blast furnace operators would meet the announcement of the advance of 50 cents non-Bessemer ores. It soon de veloped that while some consumers were disposed to complain, others were not, and nearly ail. with the exception of those of the rta^J. were reedy to place their orders, hence buying has been very heavy during the last few days and several million tons have been contracted for. Some indepen dent interests have not announced their position in regard to the ore situation, but it Is believed that they will conform to the recently announced prices. Specifying against contracts expiring with the year was very heavy and cancella tions" made on account of failure to specify were few. New business is not heavy and contracting i* betas; done in a very con servative way, conditions varying accord- Ing to material, the character or order and desirability of the business. Rail salPs this ■w^ek amounted to about 40,<j<>Q tons, of which 30.000 tons were open hearth for the Burlington. Negotiations involving consid erable tonnage on rails were pending in the Pitt=!.urg district. Severe weather condi tion.- have interfered to a considerable ex tent with operations at many plants during the last week. The tonnage of i-heets and tin plate entered for rollings last month was extremely heavy, not having been equalled since the final month of 1900. COBALT STOCKS. iKurrii— by Warren. Stocks Doicn on Bear Pressure and Public Selling. Current stock market operations re flect an absence of- aggressive buying power, but willingness on the part of the larger interests to take securities on con cessions. Buying of this character was reflected In the purchases made on the decline in yesterday's market, which in the first hour of business ran from 1 to 3 points, with the chief weakness in Rock Island, the downward movement follow ing a strong opening in the majority of active ipfties. Heaviness in Rock Island was based entirely on speculative con siderations, including the theory that much of the stock bought in the recent sensational advance had been liquidated and that the people behind the manipu lation had retired from the market with substantial losses: also the theory, which might better have been called a fact, that the issue was selling well above its actual worth and was a good short sale at prevailing quotations. For the same reason some people believe the entire market should be sold, but In operating on this idea it may be. well to bear in mind that stocks, outside- of a good sized public commission house account, are in extremely strong hands, and that so far there has been no indication of ex tensive distribution by the chief interests in the Street. At the close of the second hour Rock Island showed a loss of 3 points from its opening, while American Smelting, Consolidated Gas, Reading, Southern Pacific, fnion Pacific and United States Steel were down from 1 to 1% points. Declines in the afternoon ran from 2 to 7 points in the leading stocks, Rock Island, on enormous dealings, selling un der 49, compared with 81, the high price recorded in the manipulation of Monday, December 27. 1909. Sales of this issue in the last two hours of business were accompanied by a report that leading in terests in the Rock Island property had agreed to disagree on important matters affecting the management of the road, the origin of the rumor, however, being too doubtful to impress well Informed observers. The attack on prices in the general list was helped by traders' "in formation" that big men were selling stocks, but from Information received by The Tribune stocks were bought on the decline by banking houses for the ac count of the thief capitalists in the ; Street, their purchases including a large I amount of stock thrown on th«- market [ by public traders who were frightened by the weakness In Rock Island and other issu* s. The selling movement was not a novel development of a' market filled with stop loss orders and overburdened with weak bull accounts. Final prices wore only a trifle above the lowest of the day, with the heaviest loss in Rock Island, which i n<i''<l 7V« under Tuesday's last quota tions; Amalgamated Copper, American Sm«lters, Atchlson, Consolidated Gas, Reading. Union Pacific, Wabash pre ferred and United States Steel. No ac tion lias been taken by the directors of the Rock Island regarding a dividend payment on the preferred stock, but it is understood that if traffic continues to improve holders of the issue will receive a payment in the course of the current year. The fact that the directors at their meeting on Tuesday did not declare a dividend was used as an argument by bear traders for lower prices in yester day's operations, though it was pretty well known that a dividend at this par ticular time was out of the question. Rock Island has been overbulled. The issue probably is now seeking its normal level. Call money opened at 7 per cent and touched 8 per cent, ruling at 7 per cent, with indications pointing to lower though NEW-YORK DAILY TRIBUNE, THI'RSDAV. JA.M'AKY 6, 1910. not easy rates in the course of the next fortnight. The January interest and dividend funds are returning to the banks, and so far in the current week the Clearing House institutions have gained on their operations with the Suft- Treasury, the latter movement, how ever, having been offset by engage ments of gold for South America and shipments of currency to Chicago, where exchange on New York is at a discount, as compared with a premium a week ago. Sterling exchange was strong yes terday, demand advancing 30 points as a consequence of a scarcity of bills, and an active demand for remittance. The position of the market indicates a con siderable short interest, which appar ently is being covered through cables, which for prompt delivery are up 35 points from Tuesday's closing and about 15 points higher for next Saturday and Monday. Exchange is at the point that permits London to settle obligations in South America by gold exports from this centre, as reflected in engagements in the current week of $1,250,000 lor ship ment to Brazil. In spite of the receipts of new gold from the mines in the last year gold coin and gold certificates in circulation show a substantial decline as a result of the heavy shipments of the metal to Europe and South America, a net gain in the actual amount of money in circulation, according to the federal Treasury figures as of January 1 of $89, 838.835, having been due to the increase in our bond secured national bank notes BOND MARKET SALES. 4W oU| r CouP oit l2oool^kSt, BS;: g 18080 do *::::: S£ gg I ••••;;;; « 37500 do ....... 88% , }<*« go 3%s • . . . 9'^* 1000 Arg 6s Rets 85% 20U0 L 'V » «„,, 3000 NY C 4VaS jIJOOOL.^ . . .I«H4 101.X) do 1W:I %**> 15,I 5 , w2 ;4000 do :::::::S»I >«*> M <,«.*!?«. 2WO<J do UKtVsl . yyi; l.sooo do 4sl«s».lo<JV»i M ,7 . - T ' j' t 18000 All-Ch 58... After- a generally steady opening:, with trading on a fair scale, the market for outside securities developed decided weak ness almost throughout the list, with losses from a pmall fraction to about 2 points. while in some of the higher priced special ties the declines extended to about 5 points. ' In one. or two of the copper stocks, however, continued inside buying held prices at about the highest level. This was especially so in Kerr Lake and Con solidated Arizona Smelting, which main tained a strong tone- on renewed activity. Miami. Greene-Cananea. Boston Glroux and Nevada Consolidated were weak. United Copper and British "Columbia de veloped some strength on more animation. Glla fell 2 points. The industrial list was easier, especially Standard Oil. which ran off 5 points on fairly large offerings. American Tobacco was lower in the bid. Northern Securities stubs were up about 4 points."
