Transactions in stocks were heavy in volume throughout the five hours of business on a movement of prices that showed net grains in the larger number of issues nt The- close. In the early opera tions traders endeavored to establish quotations on a higher level, but on the advance stock was met with in quan tity, and at the end of the morning; ses sion the general market was under the final figures of the preceding day. Deal ings in United States Steel common were enormous, sales of from 3.000 to .-..000 shares at a time. -being common, while one instance of "■ 9.000 shares changing hands was reported without the accompaniment of specific news af fecting the United States Steel Corpora tion. Bulls on the stock thought that the price held remarkably well in view of the extent of the selling, and from the showing made by the issue they were satisfied that, notwithstanding the evi dence that genuine liquidation was under way. no severe decline might be looked for. even though the directors should decide not to advance the divi dend at the next quarterly meeting. It required 30.000 shares of the stock to put the price down 1 point In the first two hours of trading, the movement re flecting an unusually good absorptive capacity for the issue. Southern Pa cific was in demand, and the Street again thought it detected buying for the account of the Union Pacific. The market was not affected to any extent by the President's special mes sage to Congress, the recommendations of which were in line with expectations based on fairly accurate forecasts of re cent days. Legislation suggested by the President would favor investors, while it would tend to curtail the speculative activity of directors of corporations and might serve, to restrict general specu lative operations which in the end would redound to the benefit of the financial community. Wall Street had a report yesterday that a big bear pool had been formed to break the market and would use the President's attitude on corpora tions as its chief argument, but the course of prices did not show note worthy progress in that direction, nor was there anything in the character of trading that indicated the presence in the market of strong interests working together for cheaper quotations. It is known, however, that certain large oper ators have been working independently on the bear side In recent days. Most stocks rallied in the late opera tions, and traders who made commit ments for short account earlier in the day covered their contracts as a rule, es pecially in United States Steel, which ended at a small net gain, against a maximum decline in the day of 1 point Kew York Central led the railroad shares in point of strength, while Union Pacific and Southern Pacific acted bet ter, buying of the Harriman Issues com ing from sources that caused consider able uneasiness among the shorts. Call loan rates did not go above 6 per cent, and the preliminary statement of the week's movement of money indicated a favorable showing by the Clearing House Institutions to-day, the known changes in holdings suggesting an Important ad dition to cash resources. On their oper ations with the interior the banks have gained upward of $5 ,000.000. BOSTON STOCKS. (Furnished by R. L Day & Co.. No. 37 Wall street.) Jar. d Jan. 7. . Jan 6. CONSOLIDATED EXCHANGE. Trading was active on the Consolidated Exchange, with the business more concen trated in the standard issues than was the case- the day before. United States Steel common supplied the largest volume, with Reading second and Union Pacific third. Considerable nervousness attended the early trading, reflecting contrary reports as to what the President would say in his niessage. The message, when it appeared. as generally regarded favorably. As a rule the industrials showed a "better tone than the railroads. Reading early in the day did not sell above 167*4, compared with a New York Stock Exchange high price of 168, and after the message appeared sold as low as 186%, against a low on the other board of 166. Steel common touched a high, price of SSs«. which was hi of a point above the top figure attained on the other exchange. Hock Island common's high for the day was 4S. % of a point under the other board. None zt the low priced spe cialties was notably active. Detailed op erations follow: STOCKS. Sales. Open. High- Low.
