An important downtown transaction -was
the sale by the Children's Aid Society to
James Cruikshaak, of No. 156 to 160 Leonard

Missions Boards' conference at Urn Marble
Collegiate Church yesterday, said the
world missionary conference, to be held at
Edinburgh, Scotland, In June, would be to
religion what the first peace conference
at The Hague was to the nations of thn
world. It would be the means, said Mr.
T/ow, of bringing together representatives
of all denominations conducting missions,
and therefore give an opportunity to per
fect the work being done.
It wna also Mr. Low's opinion that th«
conference would be the means of- estab
lishing an international body of great sig
nificance.
As on previous days of th© confereru-e,
much attention was given to the address
by the Rev. Dr. Julius Richter, of Ger
many, who is here to identify himself with
the Laymen's Missionary Movement. Dr.
Richter spoke on the Edinburgh confer
er.ee. Up also paid that the wonderful
awakening in Japan, China. Tndia. Turkey
and Africa, unless Christianity were the
backbone of it, would lead only to de
terioration and destruction.
After some committee reports the. con
ference, was ended.
BREACH OF PROMISE SUIT.
New Orleans Girl Wants Damages from
New York Broker.

Faurie, of New Orleans, is the plaintiff in
a. suit for breach of promise against Harry
I,azelle, a broker, from whom she seeks
$75,0(0 damages. The case was called be
fore Justice Giegeric.h. in tho Supremo
Court, yesterday, and was adjourne-d until
Monday.
Miss Faurie says that Lazelle promised
in 1903 to marry her, and several times
subsequently renewed his promise-. She
says that at an entertainment given by
Lazelle at the Oriental Hotel, Manhattan
Beach, he 'introduced her to the guests
a* his future wife. But the defendant, ac
cording to Miss Faurie, refuses to keep
his promise, wherefore she asks damage^.
Lazelle denies every allegation.
MRS. LESLIE CARTER LOSES
The. Appellate Division of the Supreme
Court denied yesterday the motion of Mrs.
Leslie Carter Payne for appeal of stay of
judgment in an action brought against the.

Hotchkiss Approves Metropol
itan Life Application.

Albanj. Jan. 14.— Superintendent Hotch
kiss of the state Insurance Department an
nounced to-day that the department had
'approved the application of the Metropoli
tan Life Insurance Company for permission
to purchase land in Westchester County to
build and maintain there a tuberculosis
sanatorium for Its employes. This approval
by the department follows a decision by
the Appellate Division. Third Department,
that it was within the power of the Super
intendent to approve this expenditure of
money.
In its application, made some months
ago. the company said it had a working
force of about fourteen thousand; that
so- 3 of the employes had tuberculosis and
other* were threatened by that disease, and
the company desired properly to care for
them. The Superintendent had much doubt
then whether he might approve the appli
cation, ao a friendly suit was begun In
the Supreme Court to decide whether this
purchase of land waa "necessary ror Its

nent Exposition and Ter-Centennial
World"s Fair Company, of New York, tiled
a certificate of incorporation to-day, but
as the name conflicted with another com
pany already incorporated the papers were
not accepted by the Secretary of State.
The company purposes to hold a worlds
fair in New York City, in 1913, to celebrate
the original settlement of Manhattan
Island as well as Its purchase by Peier
Minuit from the Indians three hundred
year? ago. The company, which is to bo
capitalized at $200,000. han secured for its
exposition grounds eight hundred acres on
South Beach. Staten Islan 1.

Cloak Dealer's Suit.
The New York feminine term won a vic
tory over that of St. Louis in the Supreme
Court yesterday when a jury decided that
Plaut. Bamberg & Co. were entitled to re
cover from Thomas W. Garland, of St.
Loota, X 1.300 for several woaMafa coats
made for the latter. Garland is a dry goods
merchant, and he refused to accept the gar
ments from th© manufacturers because, lie
