Stock market prices were strong in the best part of the day. v.ith last quo tations at moderate net grains through out the list of prominent issues. Trad ing was not active, though in the last hour the persistent strength reported in all departments encouraged n. broader demand and induced conservative specu lators v ho had been waiting for a re action to join the buying side in such stocks as Union Pacific; New York Cen tral, Amalgamated Copper. Reading and United States Steel. There was -little outside business, and while the profes sional element predicted greater interest from the public in the event of no de cision in the American Tobacco case, the midday announcement that the Supreme Court would not hand down a judg ; ment in the suit failed to attract an active inquiry from commission houses. Operators short of stocks were moder- I ately heavy buyers, and the larger part I of the day's improvement was based on i operations of this character and on buy ; ing by professional traders for quick turns on the long side of the market The chief selling came from substantial interests whose accounts showed paper profits on purchases made at recent low levels. Securities bought a few weeks ago may now be sold at figures that represent substantial gains, especially in 1 Union Pacific. United States Steel, Reading. Louisville & Nashville, Atlan tic Coast Line. New York Central and International Harvester. Total transactions amounted to a trine more than 500.000 shares, the larger part of which was supplied by ten stocks, with more than one-half of the entire dealings in United States Steel, Union Pacific and Reading. Louisville & Nashville was strong on a light vol ume of business, while the genera] rail road list offered successful opposition to bear pressure, buying on a moderate scale being based on the favorable earn ings reported from all parts of the coun try and on the weekly statistics of traf fic movements in and out of Chicago. At present there is an actual car short age in many different sections. The general market closed firm, with the chief gains in Union Pacific, Consoli dated Gas, American Smelting. Ameri can Sugar Refining. New York Central. Louisville & Nashville. Central Leather and Atlantic Coast Line. Call money continued to exhibit the firm tone noted last week, while further strength devel oped in foreign exchange under an act ive London demand for remittance. Un less Europe becomes a heavy buyer << our securities, gold doubtless will be (■-hipped to London and Paris in the course of th« next few weeks Detailed figures of the country's for eign commerce in January reflect an enormous increase in the buying power of the United States in other markets and afford ample reason for the argu nur.t that domestic consumption of the products of "ur manufacturing indus tries is running at a rate that means solid prosperity for business circles. And in the statement of exports figures also are presented showing that the for eign demand for goods manufactured in the United States is improving. Total export figures in the last month have declined entirely as a consequence of lighter shipments of food products and cotton, the latter declining in value to the amount of almost (15.000,000. against a loss In foodstuffs of $7,376,934. In January imports of crude materials for use in manufacturing, manufactures for further use in manufacturing and manu factures ready for consumption amount ed in value to $106,331*835. an Increase of 515.740.C00 over the same time in ID*/.), while for .the seven months ended January -A there was a gain of $181. ;.<;:;:,. compared with a gain in ex ports of manufactures and crude ma terial used in manufacturing of $5,153, 783 for the month and $95,090,729 since the first of the fiscal year For the seven months exports of foodstuffs,, in cluding food animals, have declined to the value of $45,020,905. Total Imports •■1 all products since July 1. 1009. have increased $183,679,558, against a gain in exports of $32,960,146. High prices have interfered with our export trade in grain and cotton, but probably more of a factor in restricting the outward movement ha 3 been the increased de j4_an<? for home cousuiepUod. CONSOLIDATED EXCHANGE. . Commission houses on the Consolidated I exchange wore buyers of stocks to a con- I siderable total in the aggregate. It ap ! peared as if many of their customers were i in expectation of a spring bulge in the market and inclined to pick up their specu lative favorites. The commission house purchases were especially heavy in United States steel common, Reading and Union Pacific, buying of the last named being plainly incited by belief that it would look "cheap" wit li the dividend off. Short coy ! ering was conducted by many of the room ■ traders, who, as la*: Saturday's loaning rates indicated, were quit.- generally short. Most activity was in the earlier' tradniK. with dealings becoming decidedly dull at times In the afternoon. Transactions totalled '73 160 shares, distributed among fifty-one ■ stocks. Reading's opening price of »«■ was Its lowest for the day and was •% of a point above the New York Stork Exchange bottom quotation. Generally, the market for the leading issues showed rela tive firmness compared with the otner board. Central Leather was the feature : among the low priced specialties.
