The Long Island Railroad has yielded on tl;e most important point in its controversy with the city In the matter of the abolition Of grade crossings and the enlarging of its one from two to six tracks from Long Isl and City to Jamaica. Under the law the city must pay one-half the cost of the aboli tion of grade crossings. There aie many streets on the map in Queens, which go across the railroad's right of way, but have not y»jt b*-<»n opened. President Mitchel of tne Board of Alder men raised the contention that it would not be right to make the city pay one-half the cost of putting a street under a six-track road, which was built for the accommoda tion of the railroad's business. After a series of confereno-s the railroad has prom ised to pay t',;i> cost of such work that may come up in the future over a.nd above whit would be one-half the cost of putting the atreet through a two-track road. It is asd n.i'.-.i that this will save the city about 1,500,000 on all the streets to be put through in the future. <»i:r- point remaining to be settled is the amount the. city hitull pay for abolishing the grade oonsjttgs on streets already •■-,it thiough in increasing the nuirdvr of tracks, lroni two to fix from Woodside. to Win neM and Uchaaond Hill. Some of th«» men indicted yesterday will make a strenuous light. Dr. K. R.
