Initial operations In yesterdays stock \ market imparted decided strength to ! prices throughout the general list in the forenoon trading, but the improvement was lost before the close on a resumption of selling by the professional element land liquidation of long accounts accumu lated at the low points in Monday's mar ket. Final prices showed irregular changes, with net losses predominating. The early volume of business was well under that of recent days, and the strength shown at the opening failed to attract an active outside demand, the absence of buying of this character en couraging the opinion among bear spec ulators that further excursions on the short side of the market could be entered Into without danger, especially in view of monetary conditions, which did not warrant the theory that a sustained bull market could be brought about at pres ent. While money rates do not suggest the probability of the development of a bull campaign In the immediate future, the general course of speculation is strengthening -the outlook for successful bull operations later in the season, and it is building up a short interest that soon must become top-heavy enough to induce pharp rallies. For several weeks th«» market "has been moving toward the bargain hunters' level. Support accorded Amalgamated Pop per early in the day was withdrawn in the last hour, and the price of the issue | declined rapidly thereafter, with the rest | of the metal group moving in the fame ! direction. In the active list maximum I declines from the high levels of the i morning ran from 1 to 3 points, railway j shares as well as industrials losing, as a 'rule, all their morning gains. A sharp (rise in the wheat market and somewhat j pessimistic advices on the crops wero factor? in th* reaction. Final transac tions increased 1n volume at the expense of prices, tat substantial interests took storks on the decline, though they made no attempt to check th* downward movement. Call money ruled at 5V 2 P^r cent, and sterling exchange, while a few points off from Monday's closing, pre sented nevertheless a firm undertone, in spite of heavy purchases of stocks by foreign houses. If money works lower exchange doubtless will return to a level at or near the gold exporting point. From the increased freight tariff schedules filed with the Interstate Com merce Commission by the Western trunk line railroads and from the proposed rate readjustment by the lines cast of the Mississippi River it is apparent that it is not the intention of the transportation ! companies to raise rates in a manner | that will involve any great hardship on the shipper. Railroad men assert that the cost of living should not be increased by the present plan for higher charges on certain classes of freight, as the added cost on any commodity as a con sequence of more advanced freight rates will be so small under a proper dis tribution that it will be absorbed by the middleman and the retailer. Neverthe less, it is likely that the latter gentle men will throw the burden upon the ulti mate consumer. In view of the in creased cost to the railroads of materials necessary to the proper conduct of the transportation business and the larger wages now being paid b"" the companies higher freight charges do not appear un | reasonable, especially as in recent years j railroad rates have been at a relatively > low level in comparison *.-Ith the general price schedules in this country. More over, under the proposed new freight tariffs the railroads will not, according to the opinion of the best informed rail road men. make up one-half of thfl amount of the increase in their oper ating expenses due to the successful ef forts of employes to secure better wages The railroads ar« food spenders with the manufacturers, and it hardly appears probable that the Utter as a whole will make concerted objection to higher rates In the case of many roads, increased CO pt of materials and increased labor corta vill offset heavier jp-oss earnings. NEW-YORK DAILY TRTBIXE. WEDXESPAY. MAY 4, 1010. and without an Increase in rates Bucb rompanies doubtless will be compelled to reduce the number of their employes, out down charges for maintenance and improvements and reduce train sched ules if they are to continue dividends. This phase of the outlook i». of cou: discouraging to the financial community. BOND MARKET SALES. MOO Japanese 2d.. B4H! 1000 Mo Pac Ist Col 2500 do 94"4 5s 2*5,.
