Stock market prices moved in an Ir regular manner throughout the day. -with small net Tosses in the larerer number of prominent issues at the close. Opening figures were at declines from the closing En Tuesday's operations, with the general tendency toward a lower level until the arly afternoon, when sharp recoveries were recorded in most of the prominent shares on covering of short contracts and moderate commission house buying for long account, though conservative oper ators showed no disposition to follow the advance. In the last half hour a heavy tone again developed, owing no doubt to the failure of the rally to attract an ac tive interest in the market. The volume of trading .was well under the total of the preceding day. and the character of the transactions did not encourage an expectation of the development of a sue tained bull movement or of heavy in vestment purchases in the immediate future. Sentiment in financial circles, however, was more cheerful over the railway and industrial situation, and leading bankers who a few days ago were intensely pessimistic appeared to be quite confident that later in the sea son foreign and domestic capital would be more of a factor in our investment markets. If the crops are large and foreign trade turns in favor of this country Wall Street activities will be measured by large daily transactions on the New York Stock Exchange. A heavy balance of merchandise exports from the United States in the next twelve months would materially help our financial welfare. Government figures giving crop condi tions as of June 1 show a percentage condition for winter wheat of SO. against 52.1 in the month before and 50. 7. a year ago, while for spring "wheat the per centage is S2.S, against 93.2 on June I, 1969. The acreage of both winter and spring wheat is materially larger this year than reported in 1309, and on the basis of this increase and the percent ages shown the wheat crop of 1910 will b-3 more than 50.000,000 bushels in excess of last year's harvest. The stock mar ket paid no particular attention to this encouraging estimate. St. Paul again * as the weakest feature on the morning decline in prices, suffering a maximum loss of 3 point's and a net loss of "i- Wall Street is bearish on the stock be cause of the increase in the company's interest charges, traders apparently be lievins that for a time the road may be compelled to pa: smaller dividends on the common shares. Local and Western bankers do not look for an active money market in the sum mer month?, while they apparently ex pect to see a material increase in re serves before the autumn, -when the in quiry for accommodation in connection with the marketing of the crops doubt less will be heavy, and when there ought to be a substantial expansion in general business. The immediate demand for money against speculative commitments in securities is not expected to be wide enough to brtac about higher rates for f'jnds. while in some quarters of the Street it ;s thought that in spite of the liquidation that already has taken place In the stock market the movement will continue on a moderate sea* for weeks to come, with the accompaniment of gradual contraction In bank loans and a corresponding gain in legal reserves. Further liquidation in all markets will strengthen the general situation and eliminate the possibility of disturbance in money in the I ill. The New York banks have in mind future developments that will call for. strong bank resource?, and the Western banks also are begin ning to place -themselves in a position easily to meet any demands that may be made upon them. Ti. ••:••• may yet be se rious trouble, in the West as ■ conse quence of the overinvestment >•'■ funds in new enterprises and the extensive -peculation hi land, and m this connec tion it la interesting to note that one of the big irrigation companies, the bonds of which wore widely sold, has been p!aced in the hards of receivers. In ad dition to business and harvest needs In the money market in the late summer ■ad early autumn it is not unlikely that »h« fdcral jrovcrnnKMit • <»i >it Qompell«4 *E\t-rOi?K DAILY TRIBUNE, THCRSDAY, SUNE 9. 1910.
