FINANCIAL MARKET Money Rates Unchanged. While Sterling Exchange Declines, The prospects of an early adjournment of Congress and weakness in the grain market. following reports of rains and lower temperature in the spring wheat belt, were effective factors in inducing covering of shorts in yesterday's stock market, which in turn brought about a higher level of prices throughout the list of active issues. In Tuesday's transac tions the bear element overextended It self on adverse advices from the North west regarding the position of the spring wheat plant, and as a consequence the favorable dispatches received yesterday from various points in that part of the country naturally caused a certain amount of apprehension among the trad ers In the stock and grain markets, who operated on the preceding- day on the expectation tHat opportunities would be offered to settle their contracts at at tractive profits. As a matter of fact, speculators in both markets practically were compelled to run for quarter. ; Stocks were strong at the opening: and [ in the larger part of the day, with sub stantial net gains In the active shares, ! while the price for wheat options was correspondingly weak, a loss of about three cents a bushel being recorded. Although the volume of business did not show a material expansion as compared with the dealings in Tuesday's market, the trading was better distributed and at times suggested accumulation by well informed banking interests, especially in the local gas stocks, American Sugar Pfenning, Northern Pacific, Southern Railway preferred. Reading, Union Pa cific and United States Steel, the last named issues being taken in spite of somewhat unfavorable reports from the iron and steel industry. The general action of the market was favorable to the theory that stocks are a good pur chase for a long pull. Prices may go lower before a sustained advance de velops, but quotations as a rule are at a level that has discounted the adverse features in the situation, and they rep resent for the actual investor a return of from 5 to 6 per cent on his money. Strength in the local gas stocks at tracted attention, owing to the relative activity in the issues. Consolidated Gas has a strong investment following and the chances are that the company at no remote period will restore its dividend rate to the level that prevailed prior to th» SO-cent gas legislation, while Brook lyn Union Gas is held by people who sei den" 1 make a mistake in their invest ment operations. The latter stock yields at its current price a substantial in come to its holders, and it Is generally believed that the company's large earn ing power and its so-called concealed assets are responsible for the specula tive interest now taken in the market fluctuations of the issue, on the theory that the favorable position of the com pany eventually will be reflected in j larger dividend disbursements. The stock closed yesterday at 144, against , 1397* for Consolidated shares. Ameri can Sugar Refining, which always has | paid dividends and which will continue to pay dividends, closed at an advance of 4 points on a better volume of busi ness Than recorded on many days in re cent months Another issue that at- j tracted more than ordinary interest was ! Southern Hallway preferred, which en- | joyed a net gain of 2 points. This stock ■ is on its way to a dividend basis. Money rates were easy, though a trifle firmer than recently recorded. Sterling exchange declined under the influence of heavier offerings of commodity and ' bankers' bills. London discounts fell to the lowest level touched since last sum mer, going under 2 per cent. "While : most bankers received a quotation of 2 per cent, some discounts were offered . as low as I~± for sixty and ninety days. On that basis money could be borrowed ; abroad for three months at a cost of about 2*s per cent, making: allowance ' for the usual commission, as compared ' with 3 to 3"4 per cent for three months' j loans In the New York market. Fcr a short time in the early cession slight animation j 1 developed in a few of the mining issues. j i Before the first hour this subsided and ! prices developed an easier tendency. The ! Odd-lot buying by commission houses on a -heavy scale was the feature of the deal ings on the Consolidated Exchange. The market broadened out decidedly, with fifty seven stocks represented in the day's transactions. The latter totalled 89,668 shares. Commission houses reported that their business m the last few days had been much better than might have been expected in view of the general dulness throughout "Wall Street. Floor sentiment was cheerful, with the rains in the North west and the break in wheat prices exert ing a favorable influence. United States Steel common again gained the leadership in respect to volume. It failed to sell un der 78, which was M. of a point above the low on the New York Stock Exchange. Some of the lots of Steel dealt in were of unusual size. One block of 500 shares was bought on commission account at .9H- Dealings in Consolidated Gas were notably large, with 2.600 shares changing hands- There was evidence at the close of the day of an extended short interest m Amalgamated Copper, which was endeav oring to cover, while in other leading stocks it appeared that the short interest had : been largely evened up.
