June 24.— A hearing v.as given by the Interstate Commerce Commis sion to-day 10 representatives of two of the railroads running out of New York City which had announced increases in their commutation rates, effective at vari ous dates from June 25 to July 5. The rail road men presented arguments why they should not postpone these increases until August 1, as requested by the commission, owing to protests from the New Jersey Raiiroad Odtoatfasida and a number of commercial bodies in the state. No decision was reached by the commis sion, and the case •will be considered fur ther. Those who appeared for the railroads were George F. Brownell and H. A. Tay lor, of the Erie, and William S. Jenney and B. D. Caldwell. of the Delaware, I^ack mant <X: Western. PENN. ROAD MEETS REQUES' Suspends Rate Increase Wlien Asked by Interstate Commission. Chairman Martin A. Knapp of the Inter state Commerce Commission sent yesterday the ■ following message to James McCrea, president oi' the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, requesting n suspension of th© new rat-s until August 1: Several complaints have been filed against advances in commutation rates between New Jersey points and New York City, and the commission is urged to suspend the pame. The new law has not been care fully examined, and some of my associates are* absent. Under the circumstances and to afford opportunity for proper consid eration, both as regards our power and the propriety of its exercise, the commission requests pear company to postpone until August 1 .the effective date of tariff an nouncing tnese advances. Your compliance with this request will be highly gratifying and permission to postpone will be granted on application. President McCrea yesterday sent the fol lowing reply, to Chairman Knapp: While our company feels that the pro posed increase in these rates is abundantly justified ani can , readily be so m°»* strated, and while "it is also advised aud believed that the commission is not invent ed with any power, either by the old or the new law. to suspend the same, never theless I feel that the request so ccur teou?lv expressed by you as chairman of the commission should not be declined and therefore the Pennsylvania Railroad Com nanV trill comply therewith and ask for n£rmi«ion to postpone, with the under sSinFand on the condition, of cottrse. that the rates shall not be suspended be yond August 1. NO RAISE IN JERSEY ON JULY 1 Railroads Agree to Postpone Increase in Fares Until August 1. Trenton, N. J.. June 24.-There ill be no increase in rates on the various railroads in the state on July .1. Thisanriouncement •raa made this afternoon b^Go^rnor Fort, who adaed that the railroad companies op erating in the state have agreed to comply with the request of the Interstate . Com merce Commission that they defer Increas ih- their rates of fare until August 1. The. application to the Interstate Com merce Commission was made by Attorney General Edmund Wilson at Washington at the request of Governor Fort. In a state ment given out by the Governor to-day he ~xr>re«ed doubt as to whether the rate making power in a public utilities law would apply in this instance, because the present trouble arises from complaints in volving interstate traffic, and he said for that reason a special session of the Legis lature would probably do little to supply a remedy for the trouble. "William Clare, superintendent of the track, premises that it will be in better condition than ever before for this race. There is a tradition held by many who have wntched the old track at Brighton Beach iffiat it 1b faster and has a better surface in hot weather. There are various theories concerning this, and the general opinion is that it Is due to the tides, which run higher in the summer. Eip;ht cars have been already pledged and four more are promised. H % O. Kelsey, who has been appointed manager of the new Carhartt No. 35. was the host at a luncheon yesterday at the Hotel Plaza to the old members of the Fnat Tire Club, an association of happy memory which once met daily at the Astor. Mr. Kelsey is well known as a manager and promoter of racing fixtures. The new car will sell for $2,250 and is being built at Detroit.
