She is to blame for the small demand for
the street product of the Indies.
When a sugar agent was asked the cause
of the drop in sugar prices yesterday he
smiled and* said: "Are you speaking of the
lady or the ship?"
It was then learned that principally the
failure of the women to buy sweetmeats
had caused a big loss to two sugar ships
! that have been anchored down the bay for
i more than a month.
i The steamship Bolton Hall, chartered
from the Munson Line, came in on Way 12
with 25.000 bass of sugar, each weighing
320 pounds Sugar at that Time •was selling
for S4 SO a hundred, but Tier agents, the
Czan?ik9w Rionda Company, decided to
■keep her in the stream until the hot
weather arrived, in the hope that the de
mand for *ug&r wpuJd increase the price.
Thus far the consignees have paid the
Munson Line $13,000 demurrage for the- de
tention of the steamer, and are now com
pelled to sell Ow entire cargo to the Ar
buckle refinery for the market prtee of
$4 24 a hundred.
