Motor Boats Eronel I! and Yo Ho
, Start Three-Day Trip.
WOMAN IN CREW OF LATTER
Both Tiny- Craft Specially De
signed for This Race — The
I - • . Berneyo Is Withdrawn.
j.Two tiny motor boats, neither —■: — --•
thin fifty feet over all in. length, started
on. a SIO-mile dash to Bermuda from off the
anchorage of the New York Motor Boat
Club yesterday morning. Followed by i fleet
of. craft, the little racers ploughed down
the Hudson River, through* the Upper and
the Lower bays and then out on the waters
of th* broad Atlantic, where they will
pitch and toss for almost three Mi days
until the finish line is sighted off St.
David's Head. Bermuda.
The craft that started were Vice-Commo
dore Cochrane's flagship Eronel 11, of the
Bensonhurst Yacht Club, and the To Ho,
which is the property of -Henry Douglas
BfLcon. of -the Kennebec Yacht Club. The
latter "coat was the first to. cross the start
ing line, and although she had a lead of
mere than ten seconds on the Broad 11, the
latter craft had parsed the To Ho before
Grant's Tomb was abeam and - led the
Maine boat in the long dash down the
river to the sea. .
The start -was made at the . foot of
West.l«sth. street and the Hudson River.
The starting signal was to have been set
at 10 o'clock in the meriting-, bat as is
usual in such races neither beat was ready
at •--■ scheduled starting hour. The Yo Ho
■was the first to reach the starting line,
and- she dashed around the committee tug .
while the oScials, were finding the meas- ■
tmement cf the Eronei 11. I
On board r.f the Yo He was Mr?. Henry I
Douglas Bacon, wife of the owner of the S
craft. Mrs. Bacon was one cf the crew of the !
Yo Ho and stated that she felt no fear re- ]
garding the danger of the contest. It is]
the first time that a woman ever has at- j
tempted to ta£e part in a power boat race
to Bermuda, although several years ago a
member at the fair sex sailed on board of
a wind jammer in the journey to the
Efiy Isles. Mrs. Bacon is an "excellent |
sailor .and has. taken many long ocean
trips. She is the possessor of a United ;
States government license as a pilot of
tears vessels.
Although Mrs. Bacon expressed no fear. !
the siza of the boats did net premise a '
pleasant voyage in the mighty Gulf '
Stream. Eronel II -was the larger. Ac- 1
cording to Morris M WUtalcer. the meas- j
urer, the craft rated «*5. against 43.62. the >
rating '-■ the Yo Ho. It mean*,' therefore, J
that" the Bensonhurst yacht must allo-x the I
Maine craft a handicap of : hour 27 rein- I
'-tes 35 seconds over the course. Experts j
were of the opinion yesterday that the time
allowance is not enough to rive the victory '
to the Yo Ho. j
Three boats had entered in the contest, '
tut at the last-moment the Berneyo. the j
property cf Samuel W. Gcaßberr. with- :
drew. The boat recently wen the Ph.'a
deJphia to Havana race, and her owner
found it impossible to tike th* away '
from his business fcr another Jen g. ocean, ,
contest. The withdrawal erf the " Berr.eyo
a.most [ ended the. struggle," as ■ Vice-Ccra
moOon Cochrane was not particularly' anx
ious to race' against only one craft. Real- .
izing, however, that the Yo Ho had "teen '
brought' from Main? for 'the contest, thai
Brooklyn yachtsman stated that he would '
start. '" .- •
Er:r.e. II was especially built for the race j
from -designs .of -Cary Smith & Ferris.
She was launched early in the spring at
Law!ey*s l yards. South Boston, acd : sines
then has been tuning up fcr the contest.
The boat Is 45 feet over all. 44 feet on the J
waterline. 3 feet 6 inches draft -and is ]
driven by a 2S-honeppwer engine. Vice- ■
Commodore Cocarane is the skipper and :
the rest of the crew la composed of Captain
William Watt, navigator; !>. Mcffatt. en
gineer, and J. Woods. J. BromSeld and A.
Meigs, all members of the Benscnhurst
Yacht Club.
The Yo Ho alto was designed for the
Bermuda struggle by the Bath Marine Con- j
struction Company. The boat is 45 feet 4|
inch;s over aIL 43 feet M inches on the '
waterline. 10 feet beam and draws 3 fee: I
laches of water. She is driven by a spec-la! ,
engine designed by her builders. Captain ;
B&con is in charge of the craft.
The race that started yesterday was the}
fourth annual contest to Bermuda. The
nrst struggle was won by the Ailsa Craig j
In 64 hours and 4? minutes. It wa? decided '
in :*TT. The following year the Ailsa Craig !
acein wa.* the winner. scoring a leg on the, j
