FINANCIAL MARKET Losses of from 1 to 4 Points in Active Issues. "Weakness In stock market prices yes terday was based in larg-e part on the absence of an active commission house demand for securities and on adverse weather reports from the spring wheat belt, advices from the Northwest being extremely pessimistic over the present condition of the crop. Reports from other agricultural sections were encour aging, and from the action of stock quotations one might have Imagined that spring- wheat Is the only crop our farms produce. Spring wheat is one of our smallest crops, and while serious damage to the growing: plant supplies an unfortunate development, it need not be assumed that dispatches asserting that the injury represents a loss in the final yield of from 15 to 60 per cent from the early June estimates correctly reflect the actual situation. Wheat acreage that has been lost will be reploughed to flax, a paying crop. Cotton and corn are our most Important crops and both are doing well. Moreover, there will be a large harvest of winter wheat, which is now being gathered, and a heavy har vest of oats and hay. Wall Street imag ined yesterday that damage to the wheat crop of three states would drive the railroads of the country into an exten sive retrenchment policy. Prices dropped from 1 to 4 points, with one of the heaviest declines in Reading, which does not depend on grain traffic for its profits. Speculative j liquidation was noticeably heavier I throughout the list than recorded in re [ cent declines, and it was helped by un founded reports that the country's lead ing banker was ill. The market prac tically was under pressure from start to finish, with such losses as 4% in Reading, 2% in Amalgamated Copper, 1% in St. Paul, 1% In United States Steel and 4% in Union Pacific. In the late afternoon trustworthy advices from the West were optimistic regarding the position of the crops, even the reports from the Northwest being more cheer ful, but these factors failed to attract a demand, except to a small extent from the shorts. Stocks are going into strong hands, a reflection of which -will be found in higher prices later in the sea son. The constant pressure on the mar ket in recent weeks, however. is forcing | liquidation from quarters where it is j financially impossible to maintain a po | ion on the long side of the market. The relatively light gain by the banks in cash holdings last week, as disclosed by Saturday's Clearing House statement, apparently indicates an increasing de mand for currency at interior points and foreshadows earlier withdrawals of out side bank balances from this centre than usually recorded In connection with crop requirements. Fortunately the lo cal institutions are well prepared 1 to meet an interior drain, and, moreover, conditions in the sterling exchange mar ket suggest that it would not require much of mi advance in money rates Here to encourage a movement of gold from Europe. Demand rates are now more . than 2 cents to the pound sterling under ' the level prevailing at this time a year ■ ago. the decline being due to easier dis : counts in London, improvement in our ! export trade and the offering of bills against Bales of American securities abroad. Interest' payments due by this country in Europe on July 1 have been . arranged without affecting sterling i rates. and the fact that these payments cali for unusually heavy sums makes the operation especially significant as showing the marked Improvement that has recently taken place in our exchange i-iarket. In the London settlement yes terday the contango on American stocks ivHs 4*4 per cent, against 4% per cent two weeks ago, while the banks charged 3., per cent on Stock Exchange loans as" compared with 4% per cent at the ■ ■■••!)? settlement. A large account ; in Americans was shown. BALTIMORE STOCKS. <F*jrr.isb«<J by Van S. l.ai<-k & ''■•. No. 7 Wall street.) RM Aek«l. liirl.Ask'd.
