Keene, once rated as one of the best polo players in this country, swung into the saddle and tightened the leather thong of the mallet about his wrist yester day, under the colors, of the Rockaway Hunting Club. Yhile bis team won its match in the tournament series for the R' ■ kaway Hunting Club cups on the field at Cedarhurst. Long Island, defeating the Van <*ortlandt Freebooters by the net score of it goal? to 15, it may be mA down as an other instance of a champion failing to "come back." At bo stac^ of the same did Mr. Keene display that marvellous quality of antici pating the direction the ball was to take that was his chief asset in the old day?, nor was his hitting: up to the present standard. His riding end general manoeuvring were surpassed by Rene La Montaene, jr. who was chiefly responsible for the Rockaway victory There was enough rough riding, however, in the match to satisfy the most jaded polo appetite. The Rockaway players were in full chase of the ball throughout the eight periods an.] the sharp turns resulted in two tumbles. Both were due to the ponies crossing their forelegs. Louis Neilson was the first to come a cropper in the opening period. He was uninjured, however, and : remounted and went on at once- In the last period Xeilson an.i Tilney I collided* and ponies and riders went down in a heap. Bo fast nad been their pace that the tangle of ponies and riders slid alone ; jhe field for ten feet. Tilney was under i neath. ! The fashionable crowd on the clubhouse < veranda leaped 'to its feet with a. gasp, and ! men llliiit*rr<l and .women turned away, expecting that another polo casualty was •to b»- added to the long list, gtrangely i enough, neither rider was hurt. ; Before the big match of the day was de cided the second Rockaway team met the Meadow Brook Juniors and defeated them :. goals to 3=* for "'" consolation cups. A splendid innings by H Foyer charac terized the cricket gsme yesterday rip tween Schenectady and Kings County at Pjospect Park. Poyer was in magnificent form and defied all efforts to dislodge him for over two hours. His innings netted him 112 runs and he gave only one chance, which came near the end of the innings. The game goes on record as a draw, al though Mm visitors undoubtedly would have been defeated had time' allowed. They were 92 runs behind, with only two wickets In hand, when stumps were drawn.
