I T may be recalled that following the development of the open market policy of the United States Steel -. ration, early in 1909. steel trade ,-=oon began to improve, and in many well informed trade circles 1t is believed that the adoption of a sim ilar policy by the United Metals Selling any would bring about like results in the copper industry. In June the pro per in the United States 127,219,188 pounds, the largest out put for any month in the current year, comparing with thr low record of 112, 712,493 in January, while in June do mestic deliveries were 53.363.196 pounds, • 78,158^587 pounds In January; n June exports were 65,895,948 pounds, compared with 81,691,672 in the first month of the year. There is some thing radically wrong with the copper situation. Tin- decline In stock in the late afternoon was helped by the circulation of sensational and ling reports regarding an alleged unfriendly attitude by Germany to the : States Incident to the situation in Nicaragua. The dosing was weak, with losses of a point or more in the ies, Union Pacific losing :hsn 2 point s. The buying on the decline appeared to come from substan tial sources, especially in United States Union Pacific. St. Paul , nd Ijtchison. Time money rates are firmer, but there is no material change in the quotations for call funds, for which the demand is inactive. As bank reserves showed a substantial expansion in last week's Clearing House statement and as the de mand for accommodation on call is. In active, there is little probability of an im portant advance in quotations in the im mediate future, but it is likely that in the autumn a stiff level will be reported. Bankers want more for long maturities for the good reason that they look for something in the nature of a scarcity of funds in the fall, and the fact that call money rules only a trifle under 3 per cent, with bank reserves at more than $18,000,600, supplies further evidence of the' probability of higher rates later in the season In all departments of the market. Call money at this centre is well above the prevailing rate in the London market, and the firmer tendency in time loans is reflected in weakness in sterling exchange, which also is affected by fairly large offerings of stock bills and the expectation of an increased sup ply of commercial bills. Demand sterling is now at about the lowest point re ported since early in 1908. New York apparently will be a competitor in th« London market for the weekly consign ments of South African gold for some time to come. While the full compila tion under the recent call of the Con troller of the Currency of the condition of national banks has not yet been made. public figures mowing changes from the last preceding call at reserve cities are available, and they indicate improve ment in bank conditions in the Middle West and a further strengthening of re sources among the Eastern institutions which have to stand the brunt of crop financing. Advices from the agricultural community, including the spring wheat territory of the Northwest, are more en couraging. It is almost certain that an enormous amount of money will be in volved in the gathering a.nd marketing of the year's harvests. FERRY COMPANIES. CONSOLIDATED EXCHANGE. A weak tone, which had been evident in the market on the Consolidated Stock Ex change throughout the early dealings, was accentuated in the final hour by news of the so-called German episode. 'Selling was large all around the room, representing mingled liquidation and the putting out of short lines by professional operators Amal gamated Copper focussed attention in the early trading, Its decline having an un settling effect elsewhere in the list. It re ceived special bearish attention and failed to sell above 58& which was -4, of a point under the high price touched on the "New York Stock Exchange. A majority of the speculative leaders failed to get as high as they did on the other board. Union Pacific's top figure was 162 12.1 2 . against 1625;, while that of United States Steel common was 71%, against 71%. The last named got down to 684, against a low on the other exchange of 65%.
