Substantial Wall Street interests sup ported stocks in yesterday's selling movement to an extent that prevented excessive speculative demoralization. At the opening- losses from the closing of the preceding day -were heavy enough \ to suggest the development of acute dis turbance in the course of the five hours ; or trading, but outside of active press ure from the, bear element and heavy , liquidation by commission houses, which resulted in a gradual lowering of quota. tions, the general movement of prices failed to bring forth an: thing in the ; nature of panicky conditions. Banks continued to call loans on accounts of I doubtful merit, while they demanded in : creased margins on loans from borrow ; ers whose credit seldom is questioned. ; Borrowers have to pay the piper when I the time for settlement comes. Unfortu j oately for borrowers, all the banks ap i parently have made up their minds that : this is the psychological moment for the j liquidation of many demand loans, and : as a consequence this week's bank state i ment should show a further material in ! crease in reserve above legal require ments. The New York banks are pre raring for an emergency, but they do 1 not expect to be compelled to take out j emergency currency. They are making: such active preparations for trouble that i there will be no excuse for the develop i ment of financial disturbance. And It Is quite probable that the banks in the West will follow the example of the Eastern institutions by forcing a radical I contraction in loan accounts. Other markets must follow the stock market In the matter of liquidation before im provement can be looked for. The general situation, especially as re gards individual and corporate extrava gance, the overextension of credit, the high cost of living and speculation based on borrowed money, must go through a I process of readjustment to a sane and healthy basis. Stocks are leading the way, and the sooner similar movements develop elsewhere the better for all con cerned. Incidentally, it is worth men tioning that the United States is not going- to pieces, and that on all declines I our prominent railway and industrial I securities are worth buying by people who have the cash to pay for' them. Cash necessities and foolish fears are responsible for some of the current sell | ing, a reflection of which is found in : sacrifice Bales in many of the usually in ! active issues, as, for instance. Southern : Railway preferred, which in yesterday's market bold down more than 5 points between sales, and Missouri Pacific, which showed a maximum loss of more than .' points. The issues named do not i pay dividends, but the same sort of celling was reported among high grade investment securities. In the wheat market prices were easier in the after- J noon, as a result of increased receipts at j Chicago, while corn declined for a. time on less apprehension over reports of ad verse weather conditions In the corn belt, though rallying near the close on covering operations. New low records for tliH year were made throughout the list of active stocks, with the chief de clines among the prominent issues in Consolidated Gas, the Harriman shares, St. Paul. Reading, Atchison, New York Central ;md United .-'tat. Steel. The United States Steel Corporation declared the usual quarterly dividend of l*i per cent on th«; common stock, and reported earnings for the last quarter available for dividends of $26,5(58,793, against $16,011/432 for the corresponding time a . year ago. Since the time of its organization the United States Steel Corporation has earned an amount available for divi dends on the common stock averaging about '•* per cent a year. The report for the second quarter of the current year NEW-YORK DAILY TRIBUNE, WEDNESDAY, JULY 27, 1910. shows a surr<lus after dividend require ments of $134)10,093, and with the sur plus of the first quarter the concern earned in the first six months of 1910 an amount in excess of the entire year's dividend of G per cent. Earnings in the present quarter may fall as low as $35,- OOOtOOQ, and to a smaller amount in the iast quarter, yet there will bo a big sur plus to add to that of the first half of the year after the deduction of the com mon dividend for twelve months. The. Steel Corporation made its poorest earn ings in 1904, net results approximating $73,00<MH>0, with a surplus aft( j r pre ferred dividends of $5,000,000; but pince that time there has been a larg-e in crease in th." normal demand for finished steel materials and a largo Increase In the capacity of the corporation. th<^ .lat ter having been financed from earnings, and it is not conceivable that a time will come in the near future, if ever, when Pteel common will pa?s from the divi dend list. The common dividend of 5 per cent can be paid on the basis of net earnings of a little less than $100,000, 600. In the first half of 1910 net earn ings have been at the rate of upward of $155,000,000 a year. United States Steel common is Belling under .its actual worth. The stock has been allowed to move with the general market, but it is probable that insiders are larger holders of the issue to-day than at any time !n Ita history BOND MARKET SALES. s«vo Jed 4Us 9* l i 1 5000 Int R T 65...
