SURPRISES FOR THE TALENT Fleischinann's Lady Idol Wins from Vanity and Hercules Fails to Take a Ribbon. Devotees of the horse conerejrated at Hollywood Park yesterday afternoon for the seventeenth annual botH show of the Monirouth County Association. The scene was a g*y one. for the show is the mo«t popular exhibition on the circuit, and there waa nothing lacking to make the opening day a complete success. The boxes were j better filled than some of the classes, which was really the only fault one mis- find with the programme, and. best of all. the ; horses were ushered into the ring for the I different? events so . exactly en schedule j time that it would have been possible to set ; one's watch by the bußle call. Ir. Cla?s •>!*. for ponies under saddle, James Hever's chestnut mare Vanity suffered her first defeat at the hands of Udo at Flei?ch rr.ar.n's little branded marc. Lady Idol, with Percy Drury up. It was a foregone con clusion that Vanity would win the class, for her confirmation is nearly perfect, and while she is not always the easiest in the world to handle, she did net mlstehave yes terday. Lady Idol is a buxom little mare with a wonderful disposition and good salts, and while she is not so chic as Vanity, she has quality and substance and she won the coveted blue. Mrs. C. Cecil Fltler showed a pair In the j opening class of the day, which was a novice class for pairs, that defeated the i entries from the stables of Paul A. Sor? I and George D. King. A short time ago T Florham King was wearing ail of the tail ! with which nature had endowed him and I was <on the farm of H. McK. Twombly. I Now be is winning blues in the heavy harn^JS classes. Shown to pole with Pandora Queen, it was impossible to boat him yesterday. Shown in the single har ness class, he did not do so well, for he wore a kicking strap, which had to be taken up several notches before he could be led into the ring, and even then. in some inexplicable manner, he managed to get his leg over the shaft.. He is a wonderfully handsome horse, however, and in spite of his bad manners, managed to get in the ribbons. Paui A. Sort's Vanity Fair won jln this class, defeating C. TV. Watson's i Kitty Grey and Norma, which took second i and third. The only ladies' saddle class was a local event, and here Watchful won a blue. He Is from the stable of Myron H. Oppca heim. and was ridden by Miss Helen Pren tice. The judges seem to like him much better than his stable companion. Fairy Queen, which was shown in the same ciiss but was placed behind Mr?. L. A. D. Per cival's chestnut mare Gretta. which re ceived a red ribbon. Another decision which was not popular with th*- majority was made in the clas3 for harness horses over I"..", hands, when Hercules, a regally hanrieonie (MatM horse, from the stable of Lehman Strauss, failed to get in the ribbons. It was ex pected that Moonshine would win the blue, for she is about the best mare of her size in the show ring; but Hercules looked like an easy second, and it was therefore a surprise to every one when Middletown Kin? was placed second. Piljrrim third and Knickerbocker fourth, and Hercules went from the ring 1 ribbonless. Tho.«»3 who like excitement always look forward to the hunters' elßflaaß. M for some unknown reason, the horses always select this spot to exhibit all of their lat ent meanness. Proud Prince, a srreen hun ter, with 11. J. Graham uj>— when he waa not off— carried oB the palm in Class 14 for green or qualified hunters. He took the fences as though they were seven feet hijrh. Instead of four, and every time he landed Bar. Graham laaaM also— nj'. always in the saddio. Again and again he struck the turf, and finally the bom ran directly over him. tearing his clothes, but not injuring him. Then Proud Prince started to walk around on his hind less and wave his front ones, and when a groom attempted to seize him by the head and bring him to earth, ho ■tfiia* out right and left, sivinsr a fair Imitation of a prize fighter. Every one was relieved when be was taken from the ring, with Mr. Graham still alive. Among those noticed on thu lawns Rnd in the boxes were Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Wat son.
