Frank Mantel!, the California middle weight, won a slight advantage over "Dbd» Kid," the netrro welterweight champion, also a ">Talve Son." In a fast ten round bout at the Olympic Athletic Club last night. The outcome of the bout was in doubt op to the last round, when Mantelfe fast finish save him the shade. Never in the nistory of the Olympic club has such a crowd attended a bout. Long before the preliminary bboy entered the ring every seat ivas filled, and when "Dixie" crawled through the ropes not a peat was to be had at any price. A crowd of fully live hundred lean fortunate members clam ored for admission outside the gates. The bout, desnite the fact that ' "Dixie" was outpointed, goes further to maintain the claims of is supporrers than a dozen victories over men of inferior calibre. Man tell had the better of fully fifteen pounds in weight and at least three in inches in height. He was by far the stronger of the pair, and used his strength to good ?d vmntaga In the clinches when he bulled "Dixie" around the ring with the utmost ease. "Dixie" hail the better of the second, Fourth, sixth, seventh and cisrhth rounds, while Mantell held sway in tlio first, third, ninth and tenth periods. The fifth round was even. Mantell took th» offensive risrru nt the start and landed his left to the "Kid's" face repeatedly, drawing the blood in the second ■ _____ with a series of _ar>s= that rocked his Mead and had him confused. In the tUrd round Mantell shook "Dixie* from head to beet, with a ripr.t to th- Jaw. The latter iv.as In bad shape and hunc «»n 10 clear hip head. Mantel] shook him oft" but was wild in his delivery, and die "Kid"" had no able in avoiding his wild lunges. "Dixie" came into hi? own in the sixth round and fought with all the conning that baa malted his boots in this locality, and soon bad Mantell on the defensive. He caught MantpH coming: in with a vicious left to the jaw that Bant the latter reeling to the ropes in distress. "Dixie" leaped In to finish him, while the crowd .howled for a knockout. Another left to the jaw made Mantell's knees sag-. Han the "kid" rocked him with lefts arid rights to the body and head, and the Golden Gate {riant swayed on tho ropes. "Dixie** hooked and FWtmsr at random, tending but few effective blows. Th«* negro threw away his opportunity by failitns' to f=tep away and measure his op ponent, while bis inability to put sufficient force into a straight punch pnvp Mantel] time to recover. He stepped inside of the "kid's" swings end managed to last the round. That round saw the negro's star wane. Mantell's weight told in the end. and though "Dixie" ______ hard Mantell had the better of the closing rounds.
