SEPTEMBER li, 1010. at the beginning of the year no surplus stocks of seed and oil, purchases had to ho made by your company in every important flax producing country of the world, and as foreign crops also were less than normal. with no surplus remaining from previous years, the competition for seed from all Fources resulted in the highest prices known since the United States became a flax growing country. Th* low price for home grown seed was In August. 1981, when the December optical sold at $1 29*4. and the high price whs in July. 1310. when the July option sold at $- SO a bu>hel. The low and liigh prices for oil were. 40 cents and S3 cents a gallon, respectively*. The high prices seriously affected the paint and "li noleum trades, which are the principal users of linseed oil. and in consequence consump tion wan reduced, and this became marked in May and continued until the close of the fiscal year. A- to the outlook for the coming year, the flax growing states of the country were afflicted with drouth during the planting season, and indications now are for a crop which may prove to be smaller than that of the last year, nor are the conditions in for eign countries at the present writing favor able for large crops." \ TOPICS OF TEE STREET. The gain was al most entirely In the item of cotton, and it ■was pointed out that the shipments of cot ton in that month v.-ere to a considerable trxtent offset by irrjports of cotton on the order of bears who needed the commoclity to make liveries. It was even asserted ihat. deducting the value of these extraor dinary imparts of cntton from the value of the shipments, the exports might show a net decrease. TO ATTEND AMERICAN MINING CONGRESS— E.
