THE BATTLESHIP CRUISE.— OnIy a
few weeks intervene before the sixteen big
battleships and the torpedo boat squadron
will head for European ports on their first
long cruise since th" all-around-thc-world
trip made by trie Atlantic fleet during
the Koosevclt administration. Meantime
the Navy Department, which already has
announced the itinerary, is ■working out the
details of caring for the vessels and their
personnel.
There la a complexity of auxiliary duties
in connection with the long trip, in which
some of the smaller craft will co-operate.
These include the transfer of the men and
stores. The terms of some of the officers and
the bluejackets expire, some of them are to
h<\ shifted, new officer? and m^n have to be
sent to replace them and replenishment of
the supplies has to be attended to. One of
the first orders along this lino was issued
to-day. It directs the converted gunboat
Scorpion, the station ship at Constantino
ple, to proceed to Piraus. Greece, to 'meet
the Louisiana and the South Carolina on
their arrival there, on November 21, and
transfer the men and store.-*.
The battleships will leave their home
ports on November I to mobilize in mid
ocean, ana the cruise has been divided so
as to give as much division command ex
perience as possible. The vessels will
spend Christmas at Gibraltar, and will get
back to Guantanamo for winter manoeu
vres about January 10.
TARGET PRACTICE IN PACIFIC—
Rear Admiral Walnwrlght issued orders
to-day directing the second division of the
Pacific fleet to leave the navy, yard at
Mare Island. California, about November
1 to prepare .for target practice. This di
vision includes tho West Virginia, the
Maryland and the South Dakota. The first
division, composed of the California;" the
Pennsylvania and th*> Colorado, now at
Valparaiso in connection -with the Chilian
centennial f?te<i t v, ill hold its practice later.
Target practice will take place off Santa
Barbara, CaJ.

SHOTS WAKE NEIGHBORHOOD
Two Alleged Burglars Get Warm
Reception in Williamsburg.
A shower of bullets was sent after two
men who. it is alleged, were forcing an en
trance into th<» Store off the United ("i?ar
Company at No. WO Broadway. Wllliams
burc. early yesterday morning. The men
were Solomon Schmidt, twenty-two years
old. of No. 881 Boerum street. Williams
burp, and Morris Kornetz. twenty-four
years old. of No. IS First avenue, Manhat
tan. Schmidt was shot in the 'eft thiph and
his companion was badly cut and bruised
by coming in contact with barbed wir«*.
Mrs. William BrockOW. who lives at No.
SS>3 Willoughby avenue, told the police that
she saw the men at work with jimmies and
a dark lantern. She raised such a hubbub
that the whole neighborhood was aroused.
The alleged burglars then took to their
heels, and while attempting to vault a
barbed wire feti^e were, shot at. Kornetz
dropped back Into the yard and hid behind
a bush. After Schmidt was hit in the
thigh he hurried into an adjoining yard.
Patrolman Wtsehert, of the Hamburg ave
nue station, who was attracted by th«
shooting, found KometS. who wanted to re
sist, but who was quickly overpowered,
while two other patrolmen. Tlaffner and
Ensile, captured Schmidt. After the police
men had gathered up the burglars' tools,
which had been abandoned, the prisoners
were taken to the station house, where they
refused to give any information about
themselves- They were locked in separate
cells on charge* of attempted burglary.
