After an exhibition of moderate strength in the early dealings stock market prices developed an irregular tendency which culminated In decided weakness in the afternoon, final quota tions as a role showing losses as com pared with the closing of the preceding day. Commission houses were not active for public account, so far as buying was concerned, hut they had a number of fair sized selling orders on the mornlng'e ad vance, while they reported a disposition on the part of customers earning stocks to take advantage of all rallies to liquidate their holdings, on the theory of ultimately lower prices and higher loan quotations. There was no material change In money market conditions in the course of th«» day. nor were there any developments affecting adversely the intrinsic worth of securities, al though In some quarters of the Street it was thought that th»» price war Insti tuted by »he Standard Oil Company against foreign competitors supplied reason for a short position In the stock market. The argument is rather far fetched. Independent oil producers in this country do not expect to suffer to any extent from the action of the Stand ard company, as they believe the con flict will be confined to foreign countries. It is well worth noting that the Standard Oil Company, with its $r.OO/XKMXK> of quick assets and net profits running 100 per c«^nt in excess of dividend re quirements, is in a position to carry on a price war aljnoat indefinitely. Declines in the last hour ran from 1 to '1 points in the active issues, with the chief pressure against Reading. Union Pacific. United States Steel and Amal gamated Copper. Bear traders were ag gressive throughout the list, and the failure of th*» market to show any im portant rallying power encouraged the idea of further losses in to-day's opera tions. It has been pointed out in this column in recent days that a bull move mont could hardly be successfully en gineered at this time, and opinion baHed upon the character of the transactions yesterday suggests that many weeks will elapse before the market Is in a position to develop a sustained advance. Selling of United States Steel common in the neighborhood of 70 came in part from Interests who have been predict ing SO for the issue in the immediate future. In steel trade circles it is thought that v.blle the confident sentiment among producers has not been accompanied by an increase in the volume of new orders the next change in the industry will be for the better, particularly as the rail roads soon must come into the market for steel for delivery next year. It Is estimated that under normal conditions the United States Steel Corporation's oiders average between 40.000 and fiO.ooo tons a day. but at the moment new busi ness Is In the neighborhood of 'JO.OOO tens, with the prospects, however, fa voring a heavier inquiry from consum ers Just ad soon as they become satis fied that prices are at the minimum basis for the year. The United Slates Steel Corporation and the large Inde pendents are working together in the matter of prices, and from the recent statements made by Judge Gary there appears little probability of lower quo tations in the last quarter of the year for finished products, while in pig iron the attitude of furnace interests also tuggfsts th.it the level for 11*11 will be above that now prevailing. Most of the larger producers are holding out for a premium over current figures on future shipments. CONSOLIDATED EXCHANGE. The selling by a commission house in the early dealings of a line of 2.000 shares of United States Steel common and I.oOU shares of Union Pacific attracted attention on th« « Consolidated Exchange. The stock, was mostly taken by room traders, who ob tained it at about the highest prices or the day. The rumor went around the floor later that ono of the smaller Wall Street operators, who had decided to close out his stocks in view of the disturbing news from Portugal, had thrown over at least some or 1 his line In the Consolidated market in the j belief that it would be the best market to sell in under the circumstances. At the start the floor tendency was to minimize the- Portuguese developments, but later there was considerable selling on tears which began to prevail that a more im portant uprising might follow in Spain Prices broke rather badly In the after noon, but at the lowest levels relative firm ness was generally exhibited, compared with the New York Stock Exchange. BOND MARKET CONDITIONS thetr October bulletin Spencer Trasli & • o. say. in reference to the advance In bond prices: "One of the most satisfactory points In connection with this advance is that it ha* not been engineered by any group of man ipulators, but is the result f wh.it we recognized to be natural conditions*, ami ; while the rise has thus far even out 1 -tripped our earlier expectations. our judg ; ment Is that It is only in its Initial stages. In dealing with this upward movement we must at the same time point out that it has not been due altogether to Investment buying, but. after the tlrst start, was helped along materially by dealers whose shelves were bare of bonds and who judged thai the time was rapidly approaching ■when banks and institution* would be forced into the market to Invest their sur plus funds. Bond houses have been con siderably aided In their purchases through the ease which has ruled in the money market all through a period when normally rates were higher than at any other time of the year."
