that the corporation would use a large

new construction purposes. The United
States Ste*;i Corporation Is a splendidly
managed concern, and :t is not likely
that the directors will depart from their
conservative policy, which involves the
upbuilding of their property regardless
of Wail Street demands fur increased
dividend distributions. Just now the
corporation is not operating in excess
of €5 per cent of its capacity, and al
though current indications suggest that
earnings will increase before the end
of the year as a consequence of heavier
orders from the railroads, it is absurd
to count upon bigger dividends In the
Immediate future. Both lh' - common
and preferred stock of the United States
Steel Corporation, however, are m a
dividend basis that warrants their pur
chase for investment account.

England rate from 3 to 4 per cent was
based upon the increasing withdrawals !
of gold from th« institution for ship
ment to foreign countries, chiefly Egypt

some quarters it was thought yesterday i
that a still higher rate than the 5 per
cent Just established would he declared

it was reported that India had taken
an additional £500.000 gold in *pit«« of
the stronger discount, with £1,000,000
provisionally engaged for Egypt. It is
quite probable that in order to protect
its own holdings the Imperial Bank of
Germany will increase its discount rale,
while the known attitude of the Bank of |
Fraure and Us power to keep Its gold !
