Boy Scouts Armed with Glasses.
The Boy Booata. who are carrp<=<l on. the
opposite of the Odd, were much in evi
dence. The khaki clothed youngsters were
out in full force, and two of them armed
with field glasses were watching the
'plane.", with the straight hacks and clo^e
attention of a couple of army officers.
Would Rather Watch Horses.
Aviation was the ta'k of th* 1 day, of
course, but there were a great many p^r
sons in front of the grandstand whose
mind seemed to hark back to the racing
days, and from the conversation it
seemed to bring .i pans that they were not
watfhins ri.orse.ti instead of air-men. The
park has ■en rhant^i from Its racetrack
appearance to an extent, for the rails sur
rounding the "fir-M" have been taken down
ami all th<=> steeplechase water jumps ana
hazards have been done away with.
Candy Now in Betting Ring.
The preat space under the stand, a part
of which was formerly the batting ring,
has been utilized for display purposes and
automobile clothing, a few aviation cos
tume?, candy booths, lunch counters, tele
phones, automobiles an'l other chances to
invest loese coins now Sill the Inclosure.
The Aviation "Rubber" Now.
Umbrellas were absolutely out of vosue.
All sorts of costumes were on dispiay, from
furs to oilskins, bat bid hats supplied the
head covering*, and th« umbrellas, if there
wore any. wore <"irried in the spectators
hands. They were of no use, for they in
terfered with the cultivation of the avia
tion neck, which seems fair to cutuid the
'•skyscraper ruober."
Scoring System Pleases Crowd.
The system of scoring used is clear, and
the crowd kept in perfect touch all the
time All machines are numbered, and tho
ofheial programme gives the corresponding
nam*>. A FlmriP code, explained in the pro
prarr.me. is us*d on the board giving the
number of laps, the altitude, the *pee<l of
the •win'i. the time an<l other particulars
concerning each man flying. In addition, a
m^saphorie gives the results and other de
tails.
Couldn't Stay at Home.
Comment was made everywhere on the
attendance and interest, even under the
unfavorable weather conditions. Persons
came on the trains all during the afternoon,
many seeming to have waited to nnd out
definitely if there was to be flying, and
when .-Asured that t.'. events would go oil
to have ''come riffht on out," as one man
said The motorists were <";ut in furs, ten
inch" plaids and leather clothes. If the en
thusiasm and interest of the crowd on such
a day as yesterday nre indication?, there
phouM be an enormous crowd at the park
to-day.
Weather Now No Bar.

fanatic, "and that is that these fellows
have found out that they can fly in l.n.i

The impulse to dash forward which gripe
the city toiler when on a summer vacation
he approaches the sea and hears for the
first time the trrunder of the surf hidden
from him at the end of the road— that
same sensation quickened into a run tie
lagging steps of the aviation fans as they
doubtfully approached the rain-swept ex
panse of Beimont Park yesterday afteT
r.oon. and before emerging from under
the grand stand caught the inspiring throb
of aerial motors.
Many a one of the two thousand who
braved the storm to cr's man in full flight
had never before seen an aeroplane leave
the ground, or perhaps, had never before
seen an s^roplane on the ground. Imagine
the emotions in the breast of Balboa as
he shinnied up that tree on, the Isthmus
of Panama to discover the Pacific Ocean,
that vast sea the natlve3 had prated
about, and it is not hard to conceive the
fluttering? of the human bosom that for
the first time experiences a new sensation..
Very few of that handful of- spectators
who endured the chills of the soggy north
easter at the international aviation tourna
ment yesterday afternoon felt disappointed
in the show. Practically every one that
came, early or,late, stayed until Moisant
and his monoplane dropped out of t*»
clouds on his return from 'cross-country,
markins the end of the day's meet. Few
dared even take the time off to eat one of
the sandwiches or imbibe one of the drinks
whidl the trust oadar the stand doled out
at fancy prices, for fear of missing some
thing.
Flights in Mist Thrill.
Undoubtedly more would have come if
they had thought Hoxsey and Ely woxud
disappear through the curtain ot misr.
climbing into the heavens, or II they could
have pictured four or nve aviators wtieelins
over the course at one time; If. in fact,
they had realized that the science of avia
tion had advanced so in the last two cr
three months as to permit an air meet
to come off or. schedule time, rain or sniae.

Those who wait for an ideal fall oaf be

some of the thrills enjoyed by yesterday s
crowd, thrills peculiar to Wind that in
creases from ten to twenty miles an hour
They won't, for instance, feel the sports
man's satisfaction in wondering Just what
hi 3 chances are of getting out from under

a dive for the grandstand in rounding the
western turn. Such a calculation rar. rapid
ly through every mind at some moment of
the afternoon's show, particularly when the
monoplanes jockeyed for an even keel on
the home stretch.
But on the whole the day was s keen dis
appointment to promoters, aviators and
"fans" alike. All wanted the Brat day of the
meet to serve as a huge advertisement for
all the succeeding days, and many a mut
tered imprecation was smothered in a pil
lov as the eager ones woke up for the
first time yesterday morning, listened to
the deluge and turned over.
There waa still ,hope, however, that the
old saw about "rain before seven . . ."
would prove correct, and aa early as 11
o'clock, when the downpour should have
ceased,- hundreds were on .-and at the new
English Cauldon Ch^ina. of which
