I*lo. NOME'S ROMANCE ENDS Alaskan El Dorado No Longer "Poor Man's Camp." Seattle, Oct. — Th» steamer Umatllla arrived from Nome to-day with 511 pas sengers and Bat,«Bl in bullion, and was fol lowed closely by the steamships Victoria and western, oach carrying gold and a heavy passenger list. The exodus from Nome marks the end of the romantic period of the famous gold camp's history. In the summer of 19<jO seventy thousard persons were assembled upon the beach at Nome, and were rich in pro!d dust. The camp has yielded BJMBMfj in gold and is still producing, but the rich dirt that could be worked by hand has been washed, and the mining henceforth will be dene by dredges on a large scale. There are nearly twenty-five hundred men In the Innoko and Iditarod districts, and several hundreds In the diggings north of ss*ome. They still are "poor men's camps," but Nome has pone the way of the. Klon dike and will transform no more laborers into millionaires. The police on Sunday captured a man who ha.l been living a wild life in the woods near here for several weeks.
